Default highbeams?

my 2000 dodge ram 1500 has what seems to be no brights... when i turn the light switch on for what should be the headlights, nothing comes on. the orange driving lights come on but no headlights. then when i flip the handle back to turn my brights on, the headlights come on. the bright light indicator comes on and they r just reegular headlights. i pulled the switch out to see what was up and there was no high bem plug. i traced the wiring harnss nd it appears there was never a wire for the brights. is this possible? ideas to fix it? just need some help.

How many bulbs in the headlight. If just one it probably has two filaments. Just replace the bulb and you'll be good. Replace all bulbs. To eliminate it being a bulb issue.

This could very well be a beam select switch problem. This diagram should aid in your diagnosis.
