Default 2002 ram1500 3.7 realistic mileage?

hello guys im new to the sight and need some advice, im thinking about purchasing this vehicle ive never owned a dodge or a vehicle newer than a 96, ive heard that the motors can easily go 300-400k these days with proper maintenance, ive been shopping around for a couple weeks this truck has high miles 196K, ive driven it for an hour or so hard crawled underneath no leaks, no noises, it doesnt have a scratch on it, its basically showroom condition and its the nicest truck ive driven out of the last 30 or so rams f150s and a couple silverados mostly 1999-2001 models and all over 130k, unfortunately its my price range, ive got about 65 to spend, but ive got this guy down to $3900, he was at 46,its 2wh drive, auto shortbed, new tires, no bells whistles, all my buddies are saying run from all of these, im told this was a one owner, and it was obviously taken care of i guess im trying to talk myself into it, am i crazy? im planning on traveling the highway from illinois to louisiana for a move and using it as a daily driver and work truck, no real towing it does have the heater issue that ive read so much on here about cold air blowing on drivers side, im not too concerned about that, please would love to hear some opinions from you dodge guys ,thanks!

I've got 105k on the clock of my 3.7 and the only thing I've done to it outside of routine maintainence is to replace a timing chain tensioner that went out around 85k. Other than that, it has been a trouble free engine. I haven't seen many of these with mileage that high but I suspect that's because I work at a dealership and not an independent garage. If the current owner has all the maintainence records and the services were done regularly, I wouldn't be afraid of it.

As for the HVAC issue, it may have already had the updated parts installed and even if it hasn't, this isn't a big issue.

Welcome to the forum! Does sound like a nice truck. I can't (yet) speak to the longevity of the 3.7, first one I've ever owned and I haven't hit the 50K mark on the odometer yet lol but I plan on keeping my truck for a good long time! I agree with RamTech, if the owner has maintenance records to show the truck has been taken care of, and you're satisfied with the condition it's in I don't see how you can lose on the deal but good luck and be sure to keep us posted and when you get a chance, be sure to drop by the Newbie Checkin and introduce yourself!

Hey Guys,

I am also new to the site and just bought a 2002 3.7 manual. It has 80k on it and i paid 3400$ for it. I am extremely happy with it so far (especially because its bigger, newer, rides better, less miles, and gets better mpg than my ford ranger v6). I would love any advice you may have and some suggestions on some mods...

Realistic mileage...it's a 210hp V6 trying to push around about 4800lbs or so. It's gonna work, plus 3.7's powerband is higher in the rev range.

No problem if you want a v6. Sounds like a nice truck. But like ^he said it's going to be working overtime to move that heavy truck. I don't know from experience but think I've seen people posting the v6 gets ~17ish mpg avg. I get ~17mpg city and 20+ hwy with my quad cab 4.7L, just an FYI. v8 doesn't necessarily mean bad mpg.

It's not a bad little engine, my wife's Liberty has one. You gotta get the revs p, but once you do it's good. It's basically a 4.7 with 2 cylinders cut off and a longer stroke. Some of the same mods you can do to a 4.7 apply to a 3.7 as well. The earlier model 3.7's can be custom tuned as well as CAI, exhaust, etc. Gears and a converter (if it's an auto) would be the biggest help in this situation.
