Default No weather barrier behind 3rd brake!?!

So while I had my 3rd brake light out tinting it, I noticed that there's nothing behind it, just a hole that goes directly into the interior of the cab! I could actually touch the headliner through the hole! Is this normal/supposed to be this way? If so, that means the only protection you have from the elements entering the cab/ruining the headliner is the dinky seal around the the 3rd brake light itself! Has anyone noticed this and what, if anything, did you do about it?

it is like that on all trucks, not just Rams. If you want better protection either apply a silicon bead or cover the whole opening with mastic before you put your light back on. then just clean off the excess once it squeezes down.

A week ago I drive through some pretty hard rain in my 2 month old truck. When I got home I had about an inch of standing water in the under seat storage. I took it to the dealer and they just put silicone around it.

the 3rd brake light is the main reason that water enters the cab on Dodge Rams
it is all over the internet

Not just dodges, my 1998 F150 had the same issue and it wasn't until I sold it that they guy buying it told me "yea, i'm not worry about that, every truck does that". I should have just googled it because it bothered me for YEARS that whenever it rained hard I got a leak and my seats would get mildewyyyyyyyyyy.

Glad that info is still helping people! One of the first write ups I did and probably the most used/most helpful.

I wouldn't use any type of "liquid" sealant (caulking, silicone, etc). Do the inexpensive, easy fix now (takes less than 30 minutes) and it'll be done for life. Caulk it and it'll leak in 5 years, and you won't be able to get the lens off(and it looks horrible).
