Also do not go with jet chips they are junk, when I very first got my truck they were the only chip out there and installing it fried my computer and I had to have the dealership install a new system.

I have an '08 quad cab with a hemi. I bought it used last month with 34,000 miles. On a trip, I averaged 16.8 mpg @ 75 mph. What will a chip do for my mileage? Or would a cold air intake be better? Cat back exhaust? I am looking for the best bang for the buck. Any help would be welcomed.

Do program chips work with manual transmissions?

My thought would be is if you gain Hp (within a certain severity of modification) You should gain mileage. The more power your motor has the easier it is to move the truck. So unless you have a crazy rich tune. Any moderate gain in power should give you better mileage.

I think you just about nailed it. Unless you are creating more power by using more fuel (larger injectors, larger displacement, and even turbo or S/C) then if you gain more power you should gain mileage.

How hard is the installation of a programmer, and how exactly do they work?

If they'd just optimize timing, spark and fuel mapping they could create more power and mpg....but they cant go too fine tuned because it relies on everything working perfectly (clean air filters and fuel filters to maintain volume and pressure w/o interruptions.. etc etc) There has to be an idiots tolerance.
