Those are cool pics, man, thanks for sharing! At first you said your dog was used for explosives tracking, but what does a combat tracking dog handler do? Beautiful dog, BTW, and what kind of training is required for you and your dog?

Post .

sorry i should have explained a little better, these pics are from my 06-07 deployment. at that time i was a bomb dog handler. during my 08-09 deployment i served as a combat tracking dog handler. the PEDDS (bomb dogs) you train with at lackland airforce base and the CTD program (combat tracking dog program) is contracted out to train current military dog handlers the ropes of tracking wth K-9's. simply because the army is just now getting back into and realizing the need of tracking teams again. this program hasn't been around since the vietnam era.(the marines have been using this program for a couple years already, and the army is just now getting back on board.)it is proving to be very useful in the areas of iraq and afghanistan. and is looking like it will be around much longer this time around.

That is pretty interesting, I didn't even know the military had such a program, even in Vietnam. So are the dogs used to detect explosives and to track people as well? I imagine if that is the case, you are right, tracking teams will definitely be useful in Iraq/Afghanistan for quite a while. What types of situations have you/your dog been involved in? Pardon all the questions, this is just not a facet of combat ops you hear about on the news or anything.

Default No Worries

Ask away! i don't mind answering any questions you might have. Absolutely back in the vietnam era they were problably better known as sentry dog teams, those types of teams were more along the lines of tracking and compound security rather than detection of explosives, although we did have those back then too. and yes, currently all dogs that are looked at for service in the military are trained in all those areas of training for active service. as far as situations that my partner and i have been in, the list can go on for quite a while.lol. but my dog and i have had several finds of explosives while there, and have been on several deterrent and tracking missions, with several successful missions. as far as being in the news we "K-9 handlers" prefer not to be in the spot light of the media, we all know how they can really twist any story if it gets there ratings up

I'm an old USAF veteran...here's what I worked on for a while:

Then I spent a little time in the cockpit of one of these over in Thailand (73 & 74).

It taught me a great lesson and that is there's nothing more exhilarating than having been shot at and missed!

Gathered up a few ribbons, badges and whatnot while I was in. Here's a few:

Michael, those are awesome pics, man, thanks for sharing! Gonna have to get some together of my dad, I got one of him in his chopper in Vietnam (CW-3 ret.), and he gave me all of his ribbons/decorations, too.

J1M, thanks for the answers, and I can't blame the k-9 teams for avoiding the media spotlight, 'cause I agree, they'll put a spin on anything, lol, but very interesting thing you're involved in, I appreciate the info! I guess at least if you have to be in a warzone, at least you got a good buddy that's got your back!

Default considered lucky

We do consider ourselves pretty lucky, as a normal soldier you got your buddy that sometimes you just might not like and have to spend a year with him in a room. as a K-9 handler, you get your own room, and share it with your dog (partner) for the entire year. so it definately makes life a little easier on the handlers, especially with the demand of the teams being so hi almost anywhere you go homestation or deployed. truth be told, i can't imagine a better way to spend a deployment. unless your a pilot-awesome pics!

What's up my Brother's and Sister's?

I'm a Chief Hospital Corpsman in the Navy. Been in for 13 years and plan on spending the next 7+ doing the same. I'm currently stationed with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE (Seabees) and we're out in Guam on deployment right now.

Spent a year over in the big sand box of Iraq with the Army. Was on a little Iraqi base about 25 miles north of Mosul. Was up there training the Iraqi Army medics. Oddly enough, I had a great experience over there. Don't get me wrong, though. Was still shot at, had RPG's shot at are convoy's and the constant barrage of mortars and rockets shot into our base, but, someone decided that it wasn't my time.

Here's a couple of pics:

Hanging out in Hammam Al Alil after the convoy. That's me on the left side, sitting on the hood.

Riding into the sunset, somewhere in Ninawa Province

The rocket that almost took my friend's leg off. Had to sew him up after this one hit.

Hope that you enjoy and if you got questions, ask!!
