Default 96 Ram refuses to start. Fuel pump problems?

First off, the truck is a 1996 Ram 1500 4x4 5.9L gas V8 with 195k miles on it.
My dad and I are the ONLY drivers of this truck. When I bought the truck in September of '08 the fuel gauge did NOT work/read (I've just been guessing on fuel left by resetting the odometer whenever I fuel up)

Today I started the truck up without a problem and drove about 12 miles to work. Started up fine, nothing out of the ordinary.

Well a few hours later I was leaving to haul something back home when the truck first refused to start.

It turned over just fine and then the RPM cycled straight down to 0 causing the truck to die. I tried again and it sputtered and died again.

I went and got my dad to see what he would do, he started it up and BEFORE the truck died he gunned the engine. When this happened there was a loud squeaking sound and then the truck seemed to rev up back up to normal. We let it run for a couple minutes to see if it would die on us and it did not. I then proceeded to drive it back home 12 miles, with absolutely ZERO problems/any strange things or happenings.

Now when my dad and I try to start it up in the driveway it absolutely refuses to do anything, no turn over no nothing.

Could this possibly be caused by anything in the fuel pump assembly? Such as a bad pump or filter? And could this be in anyway related to the fuel gauge not working/reading?

All the answers I've come across seem to point to the fuel pump/fuel assembly, but I need a definite answer to my particular problem.

sounds to me its more of a fuel filter issue than a fuel pump issue, 9 times out of 10 the fuel pump is either gonna work or it is not, id check the filter on the top of the fuel pump assmbly on the tank, it is relativly simple to change and inexspensive to purchase, good place to start if your on a budget like the rest of us, good luck to ya bud

i have a 97 5.9 and sometimes my truck refuses to start itll click but then nothing but eventually it does when u turn the key on u should here ur fuel pump turning on if u dont then it is ur fuel pump maybe the filter if it is turning on but ur gas gage has nothing to do with it unless they didnt plug it back in the last time the fuel pump was changed meaning they probably hooked the fuel pump up bad

Try starting the truck up . While having someone else crank it for you , bang on the fuel tank from under neath and see if it starts . If it does , fuel pump .

Unhappy Recurring fuel pump problems...

i've changed my fuel pump out twice and the last time was only a week ago. it's doing the very same thing again today! won't start, will run if you are spraying starter fluid but it's not getting fuel.
what would make this happen now for the third time?

WHOA !!

don't spray a gasoline engine with starter fluid, EVER
use WD-40 instead, it is very flammable
if you don't think so, light a flame & spray WD-40 above it, don't burn your hands or eyebrows

as far as not knowing if the gas is getting to the engine, have a fuel pressure test done on it

I don't see how the fuel pump has anything to do with your current problem, the "not turning over, nothing" problem. Unless the PCM can deactivate the starting system?

@ Derek... sounds to me like you have a blown engine. Try and turn it over by hand, sounds like you spun a bearing. Whats on the dipstick?
@ GT Yankee.... Gasoline engine, no ether? I beg to disagree, up here where I live, 'starting fluid' is a staple of winter life,on gasoline engines, but never to be used on a diesel with glow plugs, or preheaters in the intake, as to use it in these cases is a recipe for instant head removal. I would, however, recommend a windex bottle with gasoline/oil mix @ 40 - 1 to keep compression up. Shooting ether down its throat this time of year will probably result in ether lock, (extreme detonation) and dry cylinder walls, which causes drag, and extreme wear on the rings and walls. With all due respect, STC.

Check the relays in the PDC. I was fueling up at a gas station awhile back, went to start the truck and it didn't fire. Relays do tend to burn out over time or have dirty contacts.

Yeah, sounds like a bad relay.
