Default 5th gear gone

Driving down the road in 5th today and all of a sudden I lost power to my rear wheels. I have read that this may have to do with a nut on the back of the transmission. Dose any body have any experience with this?

I have never had the issue but it is a common problem. I hear there is an updated nut through chrysler and some even go as far as putting a small tack weld to keep if from happening. I think you can do it with the transmission in the truck just remove the transfer case and tail shaft housing. Hope it all works out

Default 5th gear tach weld

My 99' cummins 5 spd with 230000 miles required a weld to secure the nut. third party inventors offer a "permanent" secure but cost approx $130 ?? the job can be done in an hour but I paid the quoted 3 hr rate plus fluid .. $450 ... just drop drive shaft, drain and unbolt back of case ,, bolt is on top. I now wonder if I should have redone other bearings??? edp
