Unhappy 4x4 help!!

Hello everyone,
I am new to this website and everything and i just bought my 99 Dodge Ram 4x4 about acouple weeks ago.

Well a few days ago i wanted to test out the 4wd (4H). so i stopped the truck, shifted it to 4H. But when i shifted into 4H and started to drive it started lunging almost so i tried 4L as well and it did the same. So i just went back into 2H but it wouldnt go completly back into that gear unless i reversed the truck a tad first and after that everything would be ok.

I have no idea what the problem could be unless the truck isnt going fully in gear.

Thanks.

Sounds like the 4x4 isn't disengaging properly when you try to shift out, the reverse lets the spiral gears unmesh before engaging the drive. Also, for engaging it, it could be having problems meshing which could cause the lunging. I'd start with changing all the gear fluids and see if thet helps, cuz you could have waste material built up.

Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge can jump in here and pick up the ball.

Were you on dry pavement trying to turn ? You will get that sensation . If you put in 4x4 on dry pavement I always try to just drive straight .

Thanks for the info guys. Im going to try and replace all the fluids and see if that helps. I dont think the previous owner ever used the 4x4 because it was some old lady that owned it.

And yes i tried it out on dry pavement and i was just driving around through a parking lot.

Ill let you guys know if it works. thanks!

It will "lurch" a bit on dry pavement, in 4WD, in a turn. How about in a straight line?

Check your transfer case linkage as well. It kinda sounds like it's not totally engaging 4WD.

Welcome to the forum!

Correct me if I am wrong but shouldn't you only use 4HI/4LO on slippery surfaces and never on a dry surface?
