Default Outside temp display

My outside temp display is occasionally sticking on 84 degrees. Is this a bad sensor issue that these trucks have or is there something I need to do rather than replace it?
My truck is a 2004 1500 5.7 4x4.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Slick

May be time to replace the sensor. I believe it's located on the framing behind the grill. You can resistance test the sensor in different temperature settings. (i.e. measure resistance as is outside, then put it in the fridge for 1/2 hour and test the resistance.) Just unplug the sensor and with a multimeter on Ohms, probe the two contacts. If there's no change in resistance between the two temp variables, replace the sensor. Just a thought. If anyone has any more insight, let us know.

on my '09, it hangs sometimes
it will read something like 72 & i will be sweating standing right next to my Ram
after driving for about 15 minutes, the temperature gauge seems to catch up

I just wash it off a bit through the grille
it does not effect anything, it is just a luxury type thing
like reading the radio stations name on your EVIC & on the radio

The PCM DOES actually use the outside temp sensor to cross check the intake air temp sensor. If the variables are too far out of whack, sometimes it'll throw an engine code. We chased one for a long time before we realized what it was. But yes, for the most part it's just a convenience item.
