Default 09 Ram Downshifting Randomly

My father owns a 2009 Ram 1500 with the 5-speed transmission. It currently has about 84,000 miles. Just this week the truck has begun downshifting randomly on it's own. At 35 mph it downshifted to 1st, then again crusing at 55-60 it downshifted to 2nd, and another time crusing at 45 down to 1st. It stays in that gear until it randomly shifts itself back out. Also the gear selector on the shifter hasn't been working at all form what I've seen.

Also what is the deal with the Lifetime powertrain warranty on the 09's? Does this apply to all 09's or did he have to purchase the extended warranty.

It's a factory warranty, as long as he hasn't passed it he should be fine. Sorry to hear you're having issue with the truck shifting I highly suggest taking that to the dealer that sounds like there's either a problem somewhere in the shifter linkage or the trans itself which would definitely be covered in your factory powertrain warranty.

If you bought it in the U.S. and are the original owner you have the warranty, 2009 model year only.
When the vehicle reaches its' 5 year anniversary you will have to take it into Chrysler and have a vehicle check done. I believe you have to do this every 5 years to retain the warranty.

As for the shifting you could take it in for them to check or you might try disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes and let the whole system reset. It would start all over again and learn your driving habits. That may help.

2009 came with the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty
only good for the ORIGINAL owner, unless certain conditions are met

i just turned 80,000 miles on mine, bought February 2009
my transmission makes a grinding sound when going into Reverse from Park
no other issues so far
I changed my transmissions filters & fluid at 42,000 miles
