Default Alarm System Sugestions

I had my 2004 Dodge Ram stolen about 3 weeks ago and just purchased a 2011 Ram. I'm a little paranoid about this one getting stolen too given what happened so I want to put an alarm system on it so I can sleep better at night and not have to worry about it at work. I would like something with Remote start and also something that will send something to my phone when/if the alarm is triggered. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

DEI has a good range of products. I have the Viper 5902 which is a 2 way pager w/ remote start. It also allows you to add on the SmartStart Module which you can use your compatible phone to use the unlock/lock and receive notification alerts.

IMHO most car alarms are worthless; when was the last time you paid any attention to a car alarm going off? Have you ever called the police when you heard one? Besides, most car alarms can be defeated by an experienced thief anyway. The only thing a noise maker does is chase away the most amateur of thieves.

The trick is to immobilize and track.

Most immobilizers will, in theory, prevent the car from being started. Many alarms have the feature but I have a problem with electronic immobilizers. Far too often they prevent the owner from starting the car for no reason. I prefer a mechanical immobilizer. Years ago that was a hidden kill switch or a fuel shutoff. They still can be used but they are a lot harder to do on modern vehicles and provide no security if the thief finds them. The best mechanical system I know of is the Ravelco: LINK

They claim, in 30 years no car has ever been stolen by defeating their system.

Of course your truck could be towed, so the next step is a tracker. Lojack, Viper and others offer systems that do this. Lojack works directly the police so they have an advantage. It is about the most expensive initially but it doesn't have a yearly subscription fee as far as I know.

"Trunk money?"! Or in our case, it would be the truck bed monkey. I've had a DEI Viper in the past. It was great until the car battery went dead. Then, it was a PITA. It would take a good thief to bypass a good alarm. I'd say most are amateurs/joyriders that typically use it in another crime, crash/ditch it later.

Whatever you do, don't get the alarm system that the dealership installs
it is UGLY, & worthless, not to mention Over Priced.
The base system that comes with the Ram, won't let you start it without a electronic key
The alarm that the dealerships puts on, only seems to go off if you open the door, if you go through a window, you can strip the vehicle & pass all the goodies to a friend & climb back out through the window.

Of course anyone with much knowledge of any vehicle, can use a battery powered drill to drill up through the inner fender well & up into the battery, then they can pretty much do anything that they wish to, unless you also have a 2nd hidden battery

this is the dealership installed security system, just to the left of the hood release, GREEN round button on it, they call it the LUXURY model, the other one looks the same, it uses a round blue button

On my old viper, even if anyone got to the battery (to remove cable, etc), they wouldn't be able to start it. If armed, you had to disable with the remote in order to start the car. This is what made it so tough when the battery went dead. I'm sure a pro can still disable them, but you're run-of-the-mill thug will have a hard time.
