Default Hard shifting with nv4500 trans

I just recently purchased a 2004 Ram 2500HD, 5.7 Hemi , 5 speed (nv4500) transmission. From time to time I have a hard time putting the truck into 1st gear and reverse when I am at a complete stop. I just about have to slam it into 1st and reverse is even worse at times. If I am rolling slowly, I can sometimes shift it into 1st pretty smooth. I am not sure if its the clutch that is the problem or if it could be the pilot bearing? The truck only have 78500 or so miles on it.

I am just trying to get an idea of what this might be, I am new to dodge's.

*update*

I checked the fluid in the trans and it was not low. The fluid did seem to be quite "bubbly" and did kind of smell burnt?

I have a 2004 Ram 1500 with the 3.7l and NV3500. I first noticed intermittent notchy shifting and difficulty getting it into gear, as you describe, at around 50,000 miles. The problem would come and go and it now has 113,000 miles on it. I just pulled the transmission today and what's left of the pilot bearing had seized and galled the input shaft. I'm trying to figure out if that shaft can be replaced via the front bell housing cover. The clutch still had some life left in it. What a bummer of a failure mode. Did they forget to lube this bearing in assembly?

I have the same set-up and the difficulty from 1st and going into reverse is the same. When the truck had around 50,000 the pilot bearing went, and the same shifting exsisted after they replaced they pilot bearing and the clutch. I now have over 120,000 and it has not changed or became worse.

Sounds a lot like a clutch that isn't fully releasing to me.
