Default 2004 5.7 Hemi broken vale spring.

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram Hemi with 38000 miles that has suddenly and with no warning, started running rough while pulling into a driveway. All symtoms and a couple of hours of reasearch lead me to think it's a broken valve spring. I know this has been a problem with these motors. There are no knocking noises, no loss of oil or coolant, ect. No error codes when we put a code reader on the truck. The truck is pretty much undrivable but will start and run ( very rough) when given gas. I have only run it in park and not driven it since the problem started. I have a few questions as far as getting the truck repaired. Does the head have to come off to replace the broken valve spring? What should I expect as far as a ball park figure on cost to have a dealer or local garage fix it? I just want to be informed before I deal with a repair shop. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

You're very lucky if the valve didn't kiss the piston. If you want to upgrade springs and pushrods, get the 6.1 SRT8 ones. If you can swing it, it would be a great time to upgrade the cam too. I put a sidewinder cam in my 05 and the springs and pushrods when it had about 40,000 miles. The sidewinder cam is a torquer type, added a lot of bottom end grunt. You might pull a plug and drop a borescope, check for damage. If no damage, you can hold the valves up with compressed air to replace spring/springs.

I'm hoping that the valve didn't smack the piston. I pulled a plug from each cylinder for the hell of it and didn't see anything out of the ordinary on the plugs but that could mean nothing. I thought about doing the work myself ( not a pro but no slouch with a wrench) but I have no access to a scope and want to be sure that I don't miss anything. Just need my truck back as soon as possible.

First thing you could right off the bat is pull your valve covers and see if any of your springs are shot. Only way to find out for sure if you had any valve to piston contact is to either scope or pull the heads. If you're lucky enough to not have damaged anything, then the spring upgrade (all 16 springs replaced with 6.1 exhaust springs) will be well worth it. As stated, good time for a cam as well. You can do the springs with the heads on, but if you don't have access to a borescope (rent one?) then you won't be able to inspect your piston crowns.

Do a compression test and it will tell you if it bent a valve.
