Default 02 <>96 4.7 Swap; Newbie here today. I jumped on from the 1979 K-30 Chevy-GMC forum

I have a young friend w/02 1500, hit some ice & slammed the front into a tree. Took out the front sheet metal clip, smashed the lower core support cross member and frame horns back to the torsion bar mounting supports. Frame appears to be tweaked from drivers side to pass side (area of greatest impact damage). WP, radiator, and condenser are intact. The truck is currently wired together, coolant reservoir is ty-wrapped to the upper radiator hose and the truck (02) is currently running on the road.

The kid has located a 1996 1500 donor truck {also 4.7 v6}. Cab/ chassis & running gear appears intact. Engine is froze. PO picked up the truck for bed/box & relocated it to his 2500. Now is wanting to pedal remains.

The “Question”
1. Do I help him cut-fit-weld the 96 frame to the front of his 02, and use the 96 front clip ? (not too excited about trying to straighten out tweaked frame….)
2. Or do I pull the engine & transmission from the 02 in place it in the 96 frame ? as well as bed/ box.
From what I understand, I have not seen donor vehicle, they are comparable in terms of shape /condition, with maybe a few interior components needing changing out.

The last question I have in this post is: Can the engine and transmission be pulled as one unit or are they pulled separately “Which is easiest/ “

4.7 is a V8. Would it not be better to use the parts off the 96 and just get the frame straightened at a body shop? Not sure if all the computers would have to be swapped if he did motor swap, but it sounds like a big job and a nightmare, whereas fixing body and frame sound more straight foreward. Hopefully someone that has done this will answer.

FIRST of all...you have conflicting info. Is it an 02 1500 or 2500? A 96 should have a 3.9 V6 or a 5.2/5.9 V8. Need straight facts.

^what he said.

A 1996 and a 2002 are different generation trucks, basically nothing is interchangeable.

Unless its a 2500, then 3/4 & 1 tons went all the way to 2002 before the body style change.
