Default Why a Y-pipe?

Just playing devil's advocate here. After taking a quick look at my y-pipe, it seems to me that the pipe has been pressed into more of an oval shape, but not crushed or reduced in size. While I understand this may cause some turbulence, it doesn't really seem to be a "restriction" (unless we're talking serious mods). Am I just trying to talk myself into being cheap, or does anyone agree with this theory? Besides a maggie, my only other upgrade plans are maybe a CAI and a tuner. Opinions?...

Thanks for the link, I read through the entire thing. I think it just solidifies my theory that if your not going to go "all out" on exhaust (and other mods) there really is no significant gain to be had from just welding in a y-pipe. I'll either be going with a mufflex kit or just weld in a maggie.

I noticed gains with my new y pipe. But the decision is yours

Interesting. A significant amount? I'm just thinking the cost involved for the y-pipe/weld job would be better applied to the purchase of a tuner/tune as far as actual performance gains. Also, I'm kinda weary of permanently altering too much stuff unless it's REALLY worth doing.

When I changed my y to a custom made it felt stronger and the only mod I saw a slight increase in MPG. I would agree if you don't plan a lot of mods it won't do much its a small rain drop

after buying the y my boddy that owns twisted pipes just laughed at me. he said the stock y is crammed together for a torque step, replacing it with the maggy would actually hurt the low end torque but would breath better at the 5k rpm and above. he advised me to keep the stock y pipe and just put a free flowing muffler.

That is actually all mine is a Magnafflow 14" muffler. I looked at it and also came to the same belief and my exhaust guy said the same thing, plus the stock exhaust back from the mufflerd. But regardless I have long tubes on plan, so it will be adressed.

If bighemi04's link earlier hasn't convinced you to swap out a VERY cheap mod, then you had clearly made up your mind prior to initiating this thread.

Safe driving.

Even if it doesn't look like a restriction to you, there is a significant reduction in cross sectional surface area at the oem y pipe. This is like a bottleneck in exhaust flow.
