Blew a head gasket on my 2004, 150,000 miles. Head gaskets are a problem with these engines. Sludge buildup is also bad. I used STP ever since it was new, and my insides were clean as a whistle. I would highly recommend STP.

I went through 2 wheel hubs, a power steering cooler, an idler pulley, transmission solenoid pack in 113000 miles in my old 04.

I owned a 4.7 before my current Hemi and did a lot of research and reading and I personally have never heard of any issues concerning head gaskets with these engines. The only real problem I have heard of is the sludge issue and that really seems to depend on how the engine was maintained, specifically the oil change frequency. Without pulling a valve cover to look, it's hard to know whether this has been properly maintained on a used vehicle so all you can really do is maintain it from this point forward. Consider running some Seafoam through the oil (only for a couple hundred miles before you change it), maybe switching to synthetic oil, and change the PCV valve if you don't know when it was last changed.

I believe the 04 and 05's are very similar. In 180,000 miles I've replaced a u-joint,a ball joint and I put Rancho 9000 shocks when it was new, still good. My only complaint is a front end clunk at slow speed.

At around 50K miles the shop I brought my truck to to make it ready for towing told me it had blown the clutch packs and was eating the pumpkin. They called around to try to find a salvage axle and were having a hard time because apparently this happened a lot.

I forgot to mention this was with the 5.7 hemi and the rear end that was unique to that power package.
