Default oil sending unit or new pump?

The oil pressure gauge in my ram 3.7L is all over the place. When I idle, it drops to 0, but when i accelerate, it maintains proper pressure. However, it doesn't do this all the time. There is no knocking or ticking in the motor. Someone told me the pressure switch is going bad, I also have an aftermarket remote start, and someone told me to disconnect because it messes with most electrical components.....please help me out with some feedback and opinions!!!!

A.) The "oil sending unit" and the pump are the same thing.

B.) The oil pressure switch can cause the symptoms you're describing.

I would personally just go ahead and change it and call it preventative maintenance.

Sounds like something my English language expert (AKA Father-in-law) would say.

I offer the following clarification -
Oil Pump - Oil sending unit - A device that pumps or 'sends' oil to a different place.

Oil pressure switch - Oil pressure sending unit - A device (typically electronic) that is used to send information about the amount of pressure is in the oiling system to a gauge or other indicating device.

I agree that replacing the oil pressure switch (oil pressure sending unit) is a logical starting point. They do fail and your symptoms are typical of that failure.

It may have been beneficial for me to add that it may just be a geographical terminology issue. I've been a mechanic for over 20 years. However, I may have neglected to take into consideration different regional and/or localization terms that may add to any confusion.

However, to eliminate any linguistic differences it may be necessary to research the specific term under an images search for clarification.

I apologize for any confusion that I may have inadvertently caused.

Well, if we want to get "technical", there is no "sending unit". As per the factory parts book:
11 53020827 1 EK0, EV0 PUMP, Engine Oil
17 04868672AA 1 EK0, EV0 SWITCH, Oil Pressure

I don't know if its a regional thing, as I'm from NJ and we've always generically called anything that sends a signal to a gauge or the computer as a sending unit. I've never heard of a pump itself being called a sending unit. Hopefully the OP got what he needed out of this.

^ I concur ^ and made the exact same distinction between the two parts as your post and identified them in the same manner. A switch and a pump.

However, I attempted to clarify MY distinction of those parts as members OUTSIDE of NJ may have a different terminoligy.

As an example: Fuel sending unit normally consists of the integrated fuel pump and (signal) sending unit and most commonly referred to (in my experience) as a sending unit.

This was not intended as a rebuttal nor confrontational post, merely an extension of MY (personal) attempt to better understand how other members refer to their components in the future.

I have a 1999 2500 4x4 dodge ram with a 5.9 l v8. I have the same problem changed my sending unit problem still occurring. Any recommendations?

I had a similar problem and swapped the oil pump out for a Melling high volume pump. it took about an hour-n-a-half to drop the pan and change it. The pump was 75 dollars, the gasket set was 90. Go figure.

Anyway it straightened mine out. Still going to have to change the bearings.

But before you do any of that for about 20 dollars you can get the intake and plenum gasket set. Take a look down inside of the throttle body and check it (Down inside) for moisture/oily residue. Also check the front of the intake and see if it has an oil leak.
