It's not true. There are several people on this board who have STs with the controller and didn't have the trucks flashed. The tech probably told you that because that's what his instructions say to do. I think the enthusiasts here know more about these trucks in general than a lot of factory techs.

^What he said^ I installed a factory controller, do not have EVIC, did NOT have it flashed, and it worked perfectly! Towed a 4000lb car from AZ to CA and braking was fantastic. I am a firm believer that flashing is an EVIC integration issue and nothing more.
