A fifth wheel is a much better ride over a pull behind travel trailer, but with 1500's, you are limited to the fifth wheel models available, because you always have to take in the factors about whether you are going camping with no water hookups, that means that you have the possibility of having all the extra weight from 2 full tanks. Also there will be all the random items which will be kept inside the rv, or inside the storage bins, 2 filled propane tanks, and other odd items such as always keeping clothes in the closets, all the drawers full of objects (knifes, forks, whatever else), glasses, plates, and also food. You also got to take add in the weight of all passengers and luggage in the truck.

So if you are planning to long distance traveling with it often, then you do want to get a smaller fifth wheel, so you won't always be driving at your limit.

an example would be a Keystone Springdale fifth wheel, just for size example. Typically customers buying fifth wheels from the dealership I work at with 1500's will go for the smaller springdales or along that size range.. Here are some stats for a small one.
6316- shipping weight
1664-carrying capacity
980-hitch
26' 3"-length
11' 7"-height

Even the example above has a 980 dry pin weight TRUST me when I say you will be at or on the ragged edge of your payload when you are ready to go camping. Can you do it sure if you don't mind running at 95%+ of capacity.

Yeah it is a small market which is getting bigger, but even with an extra light fifth wheel, half tons generally aren't the choice.
Also out of curiosity, which fifth wheel trailer is it that you are looking at getting?

That's a pretty robust set-up for a 1500. It's doable IMO as long as you find the right 5th-wheel trailer. I've seen a Tacoma hauling a small 5th-wheel camper, so it's possible.

A quick Google search found this.

Default 1/2 ton 5'er

i'm glad i posted about half ton fifth wheels. lots of interesting discussions on other web sites also. it seems there is no diff between 2010 and 2009 rams except the year. the 2010 is rated much higher for payload, tow capacity and such. i've done a lot of research since my original post and discovered dodge is mainly protecting their lifetime powertrain warranty by understating the tow capacity on 2009 rams. i did just buy new couger xlite 5th wheel, 7500lbs dry, 1260 pin weight. pulls like a champ. better than my fully loaded TT of 7200lbs. did add air springs for xtra support. i know some people may think i'm crazy, but proof is in the pudding. besides does anyone think dodge will ever pay out on one of those lifetime powertrain warranties, they will find a way out unless you absolutely perfect on maintenance timelines

something else, is after speaking to dodge truck hotline and 3 dealers, including who i bought truck from new, none can give a definitive answer on tow capabilities. even after giving them the vin#. isn't that a little odd.
