I just bought my ram last week and already have over 500 miles on it:SHOCKED:. I could go on and on about how much I love this truck but Ill save that for another post. My question is when should I do my first oil change. I know the evic tells you when its needed but is there any reason/ advantage doing it early the first time. My buddy said its good to change the oil after about 1000 miles to get any metal shavings or pieces that may have been left behind.
Follow the manufacturer recommendation as outlined in your manual, BUT, I've always changed the oil in all of my new vehicles after the first 1,000 miles like your buddy suggested... for the same reasons.
I've heard that it's good to change oil early (1<1k miles). I used to do it years ago but I don't anymore. I certainly don't think it's necessary to guarantee a long engine life. I've had way to much evidence to say it's not needed. I've never had an engine have an oil related issue.
My first oil change in my '14 Laramie was at 5,500 miles. I'm now at 11k miles. I don't think I'll let it go to 10k, but I'll probably go another 2-3k miles.
Oil is cheap enough, so if it buys you piece of mind, than by all means, change early and often
I'm in the same boat you are.. I got 550 on my 2013 and I will be changing the oil around 1000 miles.. For the $20 bucks it cost why not change it in a $35000-40000 vehicle.
My first oil change was going to be around 10000 miles according to what the evic said. I decided to change to Pennzoil full syn at 6000 miles. Now with the colder weather and longer warm up times my evic is telling me to change my oil at 3800 miles. I guess i'm going to pretty much go with what the evic says and just check my oil more frequently. I'm running synthetic, so i'm not to worried about running over 8000 miles a change. If the evic figures in idle time and temperatures and such I think its accurate enough. The engineers decided on these parameters for us to follow, so why not trust them?
I usually go 1,000 on my first then every 3,000 with dinosaur oil or 5,000 with synthetic. I know I should be able to go more with synthetic than I do but, I run a lot of gravel. Could probably get by with changing the filter at 5,000 and topping off, then change oil and filter at 10,000.
I changed mine at 1,000 miles on my '12. It is all personal preference. However, as said above, changing your oil early certainly cannot hurt, and if it gives you peace of mind, go for it.
Had the oil changed the first time at 1500 and the guy came out to make sure I knew what my mileage was and to make sure I wanted it changed. For 18.99 plus tax it was a no brainer for me to get it changed for the first time.
