Alright guys I figured out the problem. The spider gears in the rear differential are all broken. That's what's causing the popping sound.

If you aren't in a position to tackle the differential gears. Check the truck for the gear ratio. I believe the 96/97 year was when they moved the tag from the radiator support to the inside of the glove-box.

You may be able to find a replacement on Car-Part.com.
