For those that are interested, I got 19.36 MPG (Fuelly.com)
I just came back from a camping/tenting trip out to the mountains (so this gives you an idea of the grades) and got my best mileage!
Here's a summary:
-Speed - 105-115 KM/hr / 65-71 miles/hr (I normally drive faster, so nice to see what mileage I can get if I take it easy)
-Weight - didn't weigh the truck but there was me (175 lbs), a dog (60 lbs) and camping and fly fishing gear.
-Grade of Gas - Mid-Grade/89 (Shell)
-Truck Specs - 8 speed, 3.21, GY Duratracs (factory size), air suspension, LM short CAI, and hard tonneau
I know this isn't ED mileage but good to see firsthand (my first Hemi) that the 5.7 can get decent mileage.
Nice! I've been very happy with the mileage my Ram is getting as well. I'm averaging 17 - 18 in a 50/50 mix of city highway. My wife by contrast in my old (2012) hemi grand Cherokee is only getting 14.6!
Here's a very basic comparison to help you decide:
1st 11 fills; average ~14 MPG, ~56% city driving
Next 15 fills (with CAI); average ~16 MPG, ~47% city driving
So I've done more highway driving since I installed the CAI so that is a factor, but I do believe I'm getting better mileage with it. Whether it's a full 2 MPG or less, debatable.
Key point for me was to lay off the pedal on the highway and I see significant changes.
philosophically I very much agree with your quote. And I simple hate that a government tells me what is acceptable/right. that said, I am very practical and look at MPG from a simple economic view. I don't want to spend more than I have to. For some, they can afford a more expensive truck payment, if the fuel bill is cut by hundreds of dollars each month. or they can buy accessories instead of gas...
It's funny, I average 10-13 MPG with a mix of so called city and highway driving. I guess the highway I use daily differs greatly from the highways some of you guys use. I deal with bumper to bumper traffic 4 out of 5 work days and now with school starting it's safe to say 13 out of 15 work days will be like that. I wish I could average 13-16 MPG regularly, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I just got back from an 850 mile round trip to upstate N.Y. from Southern Maryland. i ran 301, jersey turnpike, garden state parkway and 87 and got 17.9 going up and 18.1 coming back. i was running about 70-75 most of the way, sometimes 80 so i don't feel bad. I was empty and running with the packs. i love the 32 gallon gas tank......lets you have a great range between fillups....and lets you pick them with a little more discretion.
How accurate is the evic? I recently went on a trip over the weekend. And averaged around 11L/100km which is 21 mpg. Mostly highway driving and a bit of city. My truck just has over 3000km and I'm averaging 21mpg. I'm pretty impressed with these numbers. Not sure how big of a hit I'm gonna be taking once I get my 4" lift and 35's. I have a cc 6' box and 3.92 gears, no cai or aftermarket exhaust.

mine is consistantly about 1 mpg off to the high side. it tells me 19 and i get 18. anything you do to change the aerodynamics of the vehicle will probably decrease your gas mileage a bit....but as mentioned in an earlier post, if you are worried about the mileage in a truck, probably not the right vehicle for you. or maybe the echo diesel would have been a better choice.
With 5K miles on my 1500CC 4X4 Hemi & 3:21 gears the only time the EVIC shows less than 19mpg is when I sit at idle with a/c waiting for mama. I also work at keeping the little green eco light on as much as possible.
I have the 2014 Ram Express 1/2 ton short bed 2wd. I have not checked the mileage on it yet as I only have 2000 miles on it. While it would be great to get good fuel mileage with it, I did not buy it for mileage and therefore I really don't care what it gets. The ram express does have a great aerodynamic front end as trucks go.
I've got 2,000 miles on mine so far. Mixing city/highway driving about 50/50, I normally get high 16's / low 17's for mileage, being conscious of my driving habits. I just got done with a 600 mile (total) road trip, and got 19.3 out and 19.5 back. Not bad at all.
As others have said, MPG is not and should not be the primary consideration for a truck. While important, it's not what it is designed for. I'd simply say to enjoy the drive!
As mentioned above the imperial (Canadian) gallon is larger than the US gallon. In a post from Canada, multiply the MPG given by .83 to convert to US MPG.
21 MPG in Canada is approximately 17.5 US MPG if I did the math right.
I have 5400 miles on my Express 4x4 6 speed , 3:55 gears club cab 6 ft bed and my fuel mileage empty is 19 to 20 with canopy on when pulling my 16 ft car trailer with 3100 lb car I've been averaging 13 to 15 miles per gallon and usually running around 65 mph very pleased with my hemi.
and I do enjoy sitting next to a prius, sometimes pressing the off road 2 air suspension button to get them out of my eye sight. that said, if someone buys a prius to simply save money on gas, more power to them. however, if they are doing to a make some statement, and shove their values down my throat... well I rest easy that in an accident, I have more metal mass and thus protection around me and my family.
As an owner of both (well, by next Friday for the truck half), I agree. I bought my Prius back in '07 after I was t-boned in my '04 Ram 4X4. And it not been for the added height of the truck, I would've been hit square on the driver's door. I bought the Prius after that for my 30 mile commute and could not have been happier for the last 7 years and 140,000. But it's time for a truck again. Kids are older and getting into camping and everything else outdoorsy. Prius will be kept until the wheels fall off, and then I'll probably replace those and keep chugging, but I'm itching to have a V8 under my foot again.
I have a 2014 1500 quad cab big horn with 8000 miles, I keep the tires at 40psi, 87 octane fuel, average 60% highway 40% city driving, my average mpg Is 17-18 mpg. I've gone on some road trips and after a while of highway only got up to 23.6 mpg. I've done city only driving and gone down to 15 mpg.
My 2014 sport CC left the dealer with the S&B cold air and magnaflow cat back. Has the 3.21's and 8 speed I only run 93 in her and has just over 51000km now with zero problems. I constantly get 800 kms to a tank and my best so far was 912 when I rolled into the station from one long day trip with perfect conditions zero wind for the whole day! These trucks are amazing on fuel . Side note here I just swapped out my factory 20's for my winter wheels which are 17" and I run a 285 70 17 mud tire and on this last trip here I only managed 780 kms to the tank So I noticed it with the heavier tire plus winter gas mixing here now up here in Canada
Well, I checked mine today on my 4x4 Sport with 392 gears. I drive 34 miles per day stop and go with no highway at all. I got 13.3 mpg. That was with 87 octane and ECO light off. I turned the ECO light on and filled it with 89 octane. Interesting to see how it is this time.
I have a Big Horn CC w/3.21, 8-speed, 4x4 and 20" wheels. My daily commute is about 30 miles done in several 5-8 mile segments which includes down and up out of the valley twice. I only run the recommended 89 octane and am seeing pretty consistently about 14.6 via fuelly.com. Haven't had a chance to get any long distance freeway drives in yet and with just over 2300 miles I have a little ways to go before I hit the 5K mark that some folks have apparently seen a slight uptick in mileage at.
20.1 average on trips between tampa and Palatka.....1/2 highway...1/2 back roads........and I put my foot down when the lights turns green..........only mod is a flomaster muffler
So everyone is using 87Octane...even though the truck is recommending 89? My first few tanks were 87 until i noticed a slight ping and after research (never looked in the book or thought about it) recommended 89 but 87 was acceptable. I was getting 16 on 87, and averaging 18-19 on 89. 3400miles on the truck and doing the fist oil change here this week. Only mod is Oil Catch Can.
I have only ever run the supreme 91 fuel for my trucks life so far I'm sure when not towing I don't need to but this way I avoid the ethanol they blend in the other grade fuels here in Canada. Maybe its a waste maybe its not I personally just figure why not use the best available to me if 4 bucks more a tank kills me I shouldn't be in a truck:gy:!
2014 Quad Express with 6 speed and 3:55 gear 4x4 and I do have a canopy on it I get most often 18 to 19 this is driving 16 miles to town on open flat road, when I drive I 5 highway and keep the cruise on and set at 70 mph I usually hit 21 to 23 mpg the best I ever got was 24.2 and that was I-5 and 90 degree weather and no wind. I'm really please with mine. Also pulling a 4 horse trailer with 4 horses in it and on I-5 I usually get between 12/14, I think I would do a little better had I got the same truck but with 3:92 gears but I'm happy with what I'm getting, after all it is a truck and working is more important than milage and this little 1500 Hemi does everything I want.
Are you guys running non ethanol gas? I am getting nowhere near those numbers after 3500 miles and I'm driving somewhat conservatively and my ECO light is on a whole bunch...???
its the only thing I can figure why I am getting 12-14 at best (as do some others reporting on the forumz) and then others seem to get 19 without trying. I do a lot of city driving, but was hoping to see 16-17 at least..
I have a CC w/ 3.92 - no towing and I'm usually the only one in the vehicle.
Traffic and running your engine when not moving, say in a parking lot or drive way, are both going to hit your MPG hard. If that ever comes up with your daily use. I am getting 20mpg average so far myself for all driving with a 5.7 and 2.92 crew cab but I almsot never have traffic. I drive 50 miles each way to work and 10 miles of it is 40mph through an indian reservation which helps. I would get 23-14 if not for the 5-10 miles of city I have to pass through at the end.
