I have a question, my 05 CTD 5.9 drips oil from the front seal after shutting it down. Can the seal be replaced by removing the damper, or do I have to remove the front cover of the engine and take the seal out the back of the cover. Either way, I can do it I just wanted to know without looking and get a big surprise. I know some Chrysler engines seals had to be removed from the back of the front engine cover. I know it's a Cummins engine, but I don't know what Chrysler decided to do with the front cover on the Cummins. Thanking you in advance,
You need to remove the cover to replace the seal. It goes in from the front, but you need a specific seal driver to get it set at the correct spot. There is also a special tool that comes with the seal to guid it onto the crankshaft. Installing one is a delicate process and the seal is really easy to damage.
you will need to drill a hole in the plasic guid tool as well there is a dowl pin in the crankshaft. if you do replace the seal your self dont drop the harmonic balancer . it is a a hydrolic damper and it will damage it badly.
