Hello everyone,
This is a pretty important subject clearly because of how unhappy I am with dodge. Have owned 3 rams, my brother has had 4, even my sister owns a Dakota. The issue is on the 09 1500's, there is a pretty big issue with the exhaust manifold bolts. They have a issue with breaking off either at the head of the bolt or inside the motor. This is a problem with my truck and a problem with a friends truck (same as mine). I have seen many posts on this subject not only on this forum but a few others. My truck was in for a bad shift solenoid and they said i have 4 that are broken and i can tell cause i can hear the ticking. $800 dollars to replace all of them with the new style bolts. Dodge is aware of this issue because they have come out with a new style bolt to replace it. My powertrain warranty does not cover this part on my truck so im in a bit of hot water. I called dodge corp today and talked with someone about it and they say there is no "known issue" with this, even though every dealership has received a letter about this from dodge that if its a problem replace it, if not leave it alone. I have 4 dealerships that are on board with this that they will let dodge call them and tell them how many times they have seen this issue. WHAT I NEED FROM ALL OF YOU is if this is an issue with your own vehicle or someones vehicle that you know of, i need you to post up about it on this blog. I will be forwarding this blog to the tech at dodge corp to let him see how much of a problem this is. I refuse to pay 800 dollars out of my own pocket for a part they decided to go cheap on and is breaking yet for some reason they will not put a recall out about. If i can get enough support they will put it out as a recall and they can be replaced not only for me but for everyone else. PLEASE HELP EVERYONE!!!!
The more support for this the closer to a solution we can receive.
I've had a 2010 Dodge ram sport and now a 2009 dodge ram sport both have had the exhaust manifold bolt issue. This is a real common issue. It is disappointing that Dodge lies to cover their ass, unfortunately it seems like all the bike companies do this.
I've got the ticking noise, too. '09 hemi with 66k miles with original manifolds. It's getting progressively worse, and seemed to start last Winter (one very cold morning it was horribly loud so much so it sounded like there were internal engine issues). It usually subsides within 20 seconds, I guess it warms up enough to provide somewhat of a seal. Since I live in TX, the problem probably isn't as easy to detect as it would be in colder climates.
I am the original owner and did the 5-year inspection in 2014 as required so it should still be covered under the lifetime power-train warranty. I hope, that is, and they don't give me a problem.
It seems like it's coming from the passenger side. But maybe I should also push the issue on the drivers side, too, as these are the original manifolds.
I just had a round of electrical problems addressed with the lifetime bumper to bumper warranty (TIPM replaced, computer re-flashed) and my state inspection is due this month and I need to put 125 miles on the clock before I can take it in for inspection. So my priority is to put the miles on it then take it for the inspection. Once I get the state inspection done (I am expecting this manifold issue won't cause a state inspection failure), I will take it into the dealer for the manifold repair.
Has anyone failed a state inspection because of this? I would guess not, especially if the car is warm when they test it (which is obviously typically the case).
FCA does have some serious quality issues they like to brush aside. seemingly more so than other manufacturers. The whole TIPM thing is crazy, as is this issue.
My dad got his manifold bolts done under the lifetime powertrain warranty at about that mileage when he was in for a plug change. FWIW that was at Ancira CJDR in San Antonio. This is something that the warranty covers, do not let a dealership tell you otherwise.
I have never heard of this causing an inspection failure, and I doubt it ever would.
I have a 2011 Ram Sport with 78,000km on it, last month I started getting the ticking upon start up which went away after it warmed up usually within 20-30seconds. I took it to my local Ram dealership (which I've bought 4 trucks from) in June 2016 and was told it was the exhaust manifold bolts. They told me it was covered under warranty but sucks to be me cause my warranty expired in May 2016, they gave me a worst case scenario of $900 labour and $300 parts!
I'm going to beat this dead horse one more time. I have had my bolts repaired within the last 18 months under lifetime Powertrain warranty. Well they started up again so I went back and now my lifetime warranty has dropped. No explanation from Service Writer so I bitched to Dodge via website chat ( I know, big mistake) they have flat out denied to cover the second repair because I lacked the required 5 year inspection, even though every time the truck goes to the dealer they hand you an inspection sheet on the Dealerships letterhead. Told by the useless chat person that the last repair was a Goodwill repair. Not sure how much I will fight this, but wanted others to beware about this angle that is being used now. My only thing is if it was repaired once, and needs to be redone, isn't that part of "Goodwill"?
the 5 year inspection has been enforced for quite awhile. shouls have rec'd a notice in the mail. gives you 60 day before and 60 days after the actual time the mandatory inspection needs to be done.
I never did receive any reminders for the inspection, as others have stated also. I realize it's somewhere in my warranty paperwork and it's my responsibility to know what's in there.
My basic issue is that the repair was done once before, about 1 1/2 years ago. If you addressed it once, and the part fails yet again, should it not be corrected again given the time between repair and failure?
In the interest of full disclosure, I've already decided to ditch the whole crappy manifold and bolt issue and put a set of headers on.
I was in the same situation. Boy was I pissed! The dealer quoted $2K to replace the manifolds and bolts, and extract the 3 broken ones. This was the second time for the exact same issue. The first time was at 35K miles. That was covered under warranty. But since i missed the mandatory 5 year inspection for my warranty, I lost my lifetime. Oh, and here in PA we have annual inspections. And guess where I take it? To the same dealer.
Anyway, I now have a nice set of ARH Headers and Magnaflow muffler. After about a week, I'm throwing a 420 & 430 code. With only 85K miles, I doubt its my O2 sensors.
I'm experiencing the noise after a cold startup. First my wife noticed it while she was waiting for me to back out of the garage. Then a friend who used to own a muffler shop heard it and told me it was a manifold leak. I haven't taken it to dodge yet, but when I do this thread will help me discuss the problem with them. Thanks
I've got a 2012 Ram 1500 with the passenger side ticking sound and fear that I have the broken bolt issue too. It seems to me that FCA needs to man up and warranty this issue on all the Model Year Hemi's that have this same design. This is obviously an engineering design flaw. I do have an extended warranty and we shall see if dodge honers their commitment.
I had the same problem and the Dealer repaired it with no issues at all.
My Dealer also called me and told me to come in for the 5year inspection.
They said they will call me every 5 years for the inspection.
Have 278000 miles on it now.
Going for 1/2 million
Sorry for being new to this, but I'm having the "ticking" and my 09 Ram is in the shop as we speak. I bought the truck brand new in 09 from same dealer who has it now in shop. Currently 120K miles on it and I put them all on. Otherwise, truck is in excellent condition and runs great. Have had only few problems, but this one IS irritating. Is there any other recent Dodge official position other than the Tsb 11-002-11 mentioned on page one? This has been a good truck (my second Dodge), but may be my last since they keep denying the known issue. I put it in once before, but since the ticking was so minor and didn't seem to affect the trucks performance, they managed to persuade me to do a full tune up, at least, and I did. However, NOW they are saying $2700 to fix! Another tune up, throttle body service, injector service and #7 exhaust bolt repair. I keep all my repair receipts, so I do have a history of codes and reports. Also, I'm wondering if this is in any way related to all the "cylinder misfire" codes that seem to come and go. Maybe? Maybe not? Appreciate any feedback.
I don't know what a tune up means other than changing plugs every 30000 miles. Manifold bolts and a lifter issue is covered by your lifetime drivetrain warranty.
Well, 120K miles and repairs done. Right side by dealer (broken exhaust bolt and NOT covered by warranty), left side by me (FOR MUCH LESS THAN THE DEALER WANTED)! Not so hard to fix and parts were only $80. Sure enough, cyls. 7 & 8. Dodge/Chrysler is really "dodging" this defect.

Were they covered? And if so do you have extended coverage or is Ram doing the right thing with this? I have a 2014 and it is 6 months and 4000 miles out of warranty. I think?
Just had mine fixed yesterday under warranty on my '12 Lone Star. A well-known problem to the dealership and they even gave me a loaner, which was unexpected. Powertrain warranty is up at the end of the year so I guess I was lucky to an extent that it happened when it did.
Just finished this job on my 2010. The passenger side rear upper bolt was busted flush with the head. Took a few tries but I got a nut welded on there and got it out. Working at a relaxed pace about 4 hours start to finish. Got the bolts and gasket from AutoZone so unsure about the quality but if it needs doing again then I will find better.
If you get the manifold(s) milled down before you put them back on supposedly that would fix the problem. Headers in place of exh. manifolds are supposed to fix the problem too.
My dealer told me about it last spring while I had it in for other work. Told me $950. No Warranty. The cost of ownership on this truck has been way too high.
09 Ram Huntsville TX, I had some of my manifold bolts replaced and dodge says no.
Hello Greg, I have thoroughly reviewed your concerns; the manifold bolts are not covered under the powertrain warranty, they are a basic component. We would not be able to cover any costs associated to the repair, due to your vehicle being so far outside the basic manufactures warranty. You can be assured your comments about needing the repair have been documented in our corporate records where they will be reviewed internally. If there is anything further I can look into for you please do not hesitate to contact us back.
