Leave it alone. Rust forms a protective cover. (Did you notice how long Titanic has been sitting upright on the ocean floor?)
If it really truly bothers you... paint it with "Ospho", which will convert the rust.
Otherwise...leave it alone. IMO

pitting & rust won't throw off the drive shafts balance

i would buy a package of 40 or 60 grit Emery Cloth from Harbor Freight, preferably something that is say 6" wide & over a foot long. that way you can grab a end in both hands & work it like you would use a towel to dry your back. You could buy the belt type of emery paper & cut it to make your own lengths

sand off the rust & then wipe off the drive shaft & spray it with Rust-Oleum primer paint

I jacked mine up,blocked the wheels and sanded it while the driveshaft was spinning in low gear, then hit it with some Tremclad semi-gloss,but Por 15 is better

Hornet, I think you may have a death wish. (Has anyone ever seen what happens when a farmer gets his pants leg grabbed by a spinning PTO on a tractor? It's not pretty to see a spinning piece of meat that used to be a man.)

Stay out from beneath running vehicles with wheels only blocked and keep away from spinning driveshafts. Your sleeve will rip your arm out of it's socket if it doesn't spin you between the ground and truck-bed when it gets caught.

Holy crap man I agree you're nuts!

I like to work easy, so I'd simply unbolt the driveshaft from the rear axle and sand it on my workbench or a couple of saw horses, instead of laying under the truck and having all the dust fall in my face. Remove on a saturday, sand same saturday, and paint on same saturday. Can be driving again on sunday.

LMAO,grew up on a farm GH,yes i know what a PTO will do.
Blocked properly and on jackstands with the tires still on, using a piece of wide Emery cloth you're perfectly safe.
Tip,lay lengthwise under things, that way they'll never run over you,and slightly apply the E-brake,not enough to stop the shaft from turning while in the air,but enough the truck won't ran away if it does hit the ground.
No death wishes here boys,i've made it to 53 with-out losing any digits, lol

DITTO-LMAO , Hornet! (But I'm not certain all these city-slickers can work around spinning shafts like us country-boys!(

I just thought it might be a good idea to keep everybody warned.

You might also try Evapo-rust. A gear head friend said he's had good results with it for removing rust. For that matter, you could try vinegar or ketchup on a spot. Ketchup does wonders for cleaning off copper wires...
