I know I can't be the only one around here. I know its not the biggest or fastest out there, but there must be others running the 3.7 V6 that are satisfied with their choice. Sure we chose it for financial reasons, for the most part, but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun with it in the mean time. My time with my V6 is just starting and I would like to try and find a little inspiration.
I know exactly how you feel OP.. i just got my first Truck in December. of course id get a Turbo Diesel Cummins if i could afford it but im pretty happy, 07 ram 1500 v6 is a good truck for my first truck, atleast i think so!
i have v6 ram and i do appreicate the gas milage even though it's a pain in the ass, any ideas on making my dollar stretch further? so far ive only slapped on a k&n drop in air filter but i know theres more i can do... i need help boys
I had a 05 st rcsb 3.7. it was alright, at the time it was 4 yrs old and 52k mi and i got it for 6.5k... or maybe it was 7k? I dont really remember, but it was a good deal and i wanted a truck. For everyday use and most usual hauling it was good, but now i have the hemi, im addicted. Lol
I find it funny that a bunch of the most adamant V6 owners in this thread have since upgraded to a newer truck with a V8.
Right now, I'm driving a V6 5 speed Chevy since my Dodge is a POS. It's adequate if not towing, but if you tow, or do more than haul light loads, you'd want a V8.
I used to have a 95 Ram 5.2 and yes I'm going to join this boy band of real men driving the 3.7.
I don't see the need for two more cylinders to gain 10 more horse power of that the clown has in his truck. Seems like a lot of metal weight to haul extra in the two cylinders for ten horse power more. Maybe the clown needs two extra cylinders because he is shy a few. If he can't even read that this is a 3.7 thread for lovers of the six. My 5.2 had a five speed. And the 3.7 has a 6 speed. I scrap metal with mine and both will run 60 on the high way with over a ton of weight. I will admit that the 95 5.2 always got me 19-21 miles per gallon. And the 2007 3.7 only gets 17-18. But as for the work from each is about the same. Not a noticeable difference between the two other than millage and the 5.2 had a faster takeoff.
Do it I fell that I stepped down from the 5.2 to the 3.7. Only in mileage. At first I did but once I started using premium I found it responded just as good as the slant six did to the higher octane. Would I get or take a 5.7. Who wants to waste money on that when you could just as well get the real work horse Dodge Viper Truck.
I don't need all the racing power I just need a truck from Dodge that I can scrap iron and other metals in. And then I am here to say the 3.7 Has been doing just fine at 84 k . will this motor still be strong without using oil at 250k like my 5.7. That is to be seen in the future. It was a really great truck and it was time for a new bed that was destroyed from having short iron being tossed in. From what I have seen from the 2007 bed it won't last 12 years. But I am sure I'll make enough before this truck quite I'll be able to buy a Viper Truck. If they still make them. I have not been hanging around the dealer ship having to buy parts or aftermarket parts to keep it running. That's all I have to say now
Michael
It's not just about HP. It's about torque and where power is made in the powerband. Your 3.7 may only have 10 less horsepower, but it has 70 less lb ft of torque than the 5.2 and the peak numbers are higher in the power band.
I think most people don't have an issue with he v6, but I think the way most people feel is why get a v6 that has less hp, torque, and mpg when you can get the v8. Yeah you save a little up front cost but that's the only benefit. If buying used pretty much not any benefit.
I will say with the new v6 getting great mpg and having decent power, I bet it'll be fairly well respected.
This is my first ram and I am looking to just make a little more power than comes stock... Im running the 3.7 v6 and I just wondered what either bolt on or tune jobs I could do that would get me where i wanted to be.

I know there are mods like the fastman throttle body upgrade, or custom cold air intake, gears, new y pipe, headers and a better flowing muffler and of course the higher flowing cats. I actually found something on youtube i havent seen on the forums though. May not be the prettiest thing, but any vehicle can benefit from it. basically you make a ram air intake setup on the truck. Lowes or Home depot sells all the supplies you'd need and it costs under $30-40 depending on how much you buy. I used the vent piece you would use in the floor of a house and mounted it behind my front bumper but where the cooler wind would catch in it. Then used the stronger flex tubing (4'') and routed it to my stock breather box. Its not air tight right now as i just done it a few days ago and its been raining since. But it still definetly routes the cooler air into the filter. I won't say its a huge gain and i try not to let little mods get to my head too much. But everyone knows cooler air brings more power in the combustion chamber, so theres no argument there. Ive driven this in the rain today and on the interstate yesterday for 40 miles. So far so good. My truck has the 3.7 v6 with the 6 speed. Before doing this mod my truck would just hold speed in the overdrive (6th) gear. Now it gains speed.. slowly, but its a slight difference. For the money spent doing this, im not gonna down it. Its not the prettiest thing, but the tubing can be painted and its pretty strong. I'm sure paired with a cold air intake, this mod would only work better. And of course an opened exhaust. I just thought i'd chime in. My 3.7 wasn't treated the best by the guy i got it from. New transmission, plugs, hood, and front bumper, and this mod later.. i feel better about it. Not a power house, but I can tell the engine liked this. **no negative effects driving in the rain btw*
It has been my observation and opinion that the vast majority of pickup owners use their trucks for basic everyday transportation and occasional hauling of garden supplies or the like. My 3.7L V-6 Ram is used for just these same purposes and I’ve never had a performance issue. Actually, I can’t remember of any such time that I needed more power. Even if I had the all powerful Hemi, I’d never use or need it’s awesome power. While I don’t know the 0-60 abilities of either my 3.7 nor the Hemi, I don’t care since what I have more than meets all of my needs. For those who are always looking for ways to modify their 3.7’s for more power, I’d have to ask why? Do you really it in the first place, and if so, why didn’t you go with the Hemi to begin with. I would suspect that the cost many of you V-6 owners have incurred to modify your Rams comes close to the price difference between the two engines. My advice for any 3.7 owner thinking about modifications, just forget it and enjoy what you have. Whatever your reasons were for choosing the 3.7 originally are still valid and you made a good choice. Of course if you are one who’s circumstances have changed, such has buying a big boat or work needs now necessitate more power, then by all means, just consider trading for a Hemi and forget the mods.
I'll agree with that ^^^^ to a certain extent as in, my 3.7 is plenty enough for what I need and how I use my truck. I do think, though, no matter what engine one has in their Ram, HEMI or not, most folks will do what they can to squeeze as much out of it as they can be it mods for fuel mileage or mods for performance. My motor is stock and I intend to keep it that way. I bought my last truck for a project and this one to enjoy lol. Had to play devil's advocate but won't be long before the 5.7 owners are going to be jumping on the 6.4 HEMI! It's kind of like a dog on a leash, the leash is ALWAYS 1 inch too short!
I have a 2010 with the 3.7. Yes I got if for financial reasons and honestly like I said in the introduction forum, I love it, I tow nothing and haul very little, just some tools and camping gear when we go. its my every day driver, taking the dogs hiking, stuff like that. Basicly it fits my lifestyle and does everything I need it to do. Even had a couple of bikes in the back a few times.
Kinda gutless when punching it, but other than that it cruises just fine anywhere I go. Rides like a car man. I have no mods and am not sure if I ever will except for maybe cosmetic stuff. Kinda like what I lack in go Ill try to make up in Show. Anyway, I love it and am just gonna drive the hell outta it and take care of it so it will last a good while.
Sendin' out the Love to all the V-6ers out there! Got my '08 SXT w/auto and tow package about about 2wks ago. Last owner was pretty good with it and to date I have been detailing it. Can't say yet what I'm going to do about Mods but that's a different subject.
I haven't seen anyone list another SXT. Is there something different about them? I got the 3.7 not so much for the money I saved or the gas economy but because it looked better than anything else out there. I will be towing a small travel trailer when I get that a little later. Maybe that is a problem with a small-engine truck but hey they make things out there to fit the bill so-to-speak.
I'm from the Challenger side of the Forum. I have my Hemi R/T Classic. My Wife loves this Truck as much as the R/T. At 33K+ miles on it this truck still feels like it has some grunt.
Believe me when I start really using this truck the way I think I will I will be sure to post up a lot about handling and performance.
One thing for sure It Don't Ride Like Car It's A Truck! Enjoy The Journey! Lou.
Hi, the SXT is basically an appearance package (that includes chrome bumpers, grill, and door chrome moldings) the truck starts out as an ST a base model, I have a 2014 SXT, Pentastar V6 3.6 liter with the 8 speed transmission 4X4, Bluetooth, backup camera and trailer tow package, with the 3.55 axle it can tow 7,200 lbs. I have all I need and the price was reasonable and like you said it looks nice.
Hello, I'm new on the forum.
Wanted to add some insight on my new Ram 1500 Pentastar.
Love this truck! Simply love it!
Drives amazing, and good on gas.
I'm getting around 11 litres/per 100km in the city and anywhere between 8-9 litres per 100km on the hwy for my first few tanks of gas (at 3000km so far).
So on a 92 litre tank (not sure of exact size), my best was 840km distance on a tank of gas, and 780 when driving really hard and heavy footed.
I know the Hemi's are powerful and super reliable, but I was really looking for some fuel mileage since I don't need to tow a house.
Some really cool features in these truck and just enjoying driving this beauty.
I work with a guy who has had a dakota with the 3.7 for about 12 years and still drives it. Great truck. I now have over 10,000 miles on my Outdoorsman pentastar and couldn't be happier. A crew cab 4 wheels drive monster that I have gotten an average of 21.8 mpg for the life of the truck so far. You can't beat that.
Yeah not sure about previous generation 6's, but these new Pentastarts with the 8 speed and gear ratio's are really REALLy good trucks.
I had a mercedes C300 before this truck and my fuel costs have not gone up, but the truck is a way better vehicle and much more practical.
I have 8000 kilometers thus far and loving it. All I want to do is go drive my truck lol.
I've towed a few trailers (nothing really heavy 3000-5000lbs range) and the truck performed beautifully. For someone that doesn't need to tow a "house", this truck is perfect alternative to the big V8's.
Finally got around to posting the Pics of my truck mods. I added running boards, installed rear inner well liners and new tires. Before installing the inner well liners I got under the truck and cleaned, cleaned, cleaned. Then I looked at suspect areas around the bottom of the bed that were not painted well from the factory and I went over those with cold galvanize and covered that with Rust-o-leum primers and paints. It wasn't an altogether hard thing to do do but the prep work was tedious. Keeping the area well lit and making the truck safe to work under while she's off the ground is key.
I especially like how the the liner fills the well and really seems to capture those things that get flung up from the road.
There was a little rust around the bracket that holds the e-brake cable. That cleaned up easily and then got painted.
Like I said I bought my truck used and I really thank the previous owner for keeping her in great condition.
I also thank all of the fine folks here on the Ram ForumZ for posting advice and tips on making this possible. Enjoy the Journey! Lou.
