Default Test Drove A Jeep GC EcoDiesel

Well, I took my truck in yesterday to get the fuel tank looked at and while I was there I asked if they had received any Jeep GC ED's yet and sure enough, they had just received one at the end of last week. Seeing as I am one of the many people who are impatiently waiting for the Ram ED, I asked if I could take it for a spin. The salesman grabbed the keys and said. "Let's go!"

The salesman, who sold me my current truck, already knew that I wasn't actually interested in purchasing the Jeep, since he and I have already discussed ordering a Ram ED as soon as they become available. I told him I just wanted to get a feel for the ED.

I started it up and from the inside you couldn't hear the engine at all. I got out to listen to the engine and the exhaust. With the hood closed, the diesel engine sound is faint. With the hood open, he can hear that it is a diesel, but it's comparable to a VW TDI. The exhaust was almost silent.

I took it for a spin and let me say that I am excited about the engine again. Now, I know that the Ram will be significantly bigger/heavier than the Jeep GC, but with the 3.92 rear, I don't see why it won't feel/perform just as good. The acceleration was more than sufficient and I LOVED the feeling of the torque this motor produces. The turbo seemed to spool rather quickly and it felt awesome when the boost came on. This vehicle didn't have any problem accelerating up to highway speeds quickly. It cruised nicely at highway speeds and had no trouble at all maintaining 75 MPH while ascending a fairly large hill without downshifting that my Hemi Ram with 4.56's on 35's downshifts every time on. It still had plenty of passing power while cruising at highway speeds.

Overall, I was very impressed with this engine and look forward to having it in my next Ram.

Can I please get this thread moved back to the Ram forum? The whole purpose of this thread was to shed a little light on the new engine to the 2014 Ram crowd waiting on the Ram EcoDiesel. I, as stated in the post, am also waiting to order a 2014 Ram ED.

Those Grand Cherokee are pretty heavy, pretty close to the Ram, I believe. The Italians make awesome diesels. I've used a bunch of the FIAT/Iveco marine diesels, maybe the best marine diesels ever.

For reference the old Chev 454 and Ford 460's produced weaker numbers than this 'little' diesel.

Thanks for the info on the test drive. There is supposed to be a GC ED arriving next Monday at our local Ram dealer so I am hoping to take it for a test drive as I am also considering the Ram ED. I am looking forward to other reviews such as HollaifyaHEMI's. Thanks for posting it.

I took the Jeep GC diesel for a spin today. It was great. It has a lot of torque! You can tell it is a diesel from the second you touch the accelerator. Very quick pick up on the highway and such a smooth ride. I am convinced that it was the right decision to wait for the RAM 1500 diesel, now.

From a pure numbers perspective, the ecodiesel is the slowest of all '14 Grand Cherokees -- including the Pentastar. Of course each engine has their purpose, and it probably doesn't make sense to compare them. Some have come away underwhelmed after their test drives.

I'm watching with extreme interest. I'm also watching GM with their announcement of the 2.8 diesel going into the new Colorado, as well as Nissan getting a genuine Cummins engine. It is a good time in the world of the light duty pickup trucks
