I run 89. I may switch to higher octane once i get a tuner, but with the price of gas today we'll have to see about that.

Seriously! I'm just under $100 every time I fill up! Doesn't help that I'm only getting 14mpg and the fact that I love driving quite a bit.

I run 85 (which is equivalent to 87 in high altitude) and have no issues. If towing a heavy load I may bump up to 87 (= 89 here) but have not experienced any knocking.

Burning anything higher then what they recommend (or what will run without knocking) is a complete waste of money. Higher octane does NOT give you any more power. Zip, nada, nothing. If you can run 85 without knocking your getting just as much power as the guy running 91. Octane does not add power it only changes they auto ignition point of the fuel.

The biggest thing you could do to improve power/mileage with fuel is run ethanol free pure gas.

87 with ethanol, whether towing or not. At first I used 89 when towing, but tried 87 and it performed just as well. Didn't notice any pinging, and fuel economy seemed to be the same.

That said, I've read (probably here somewhere) that the way a Ram responds to 87 octane depends on the individual truck- some do well with it, some don't. Or maybe it has something to do with driving style. Who knows?
