why the long tube air intake?

I was always under the impression that the straighter and more direct the path of air into the engine, the better. so I want to know if there is any reason why most intakes have the long tube instead of mounting the air cleaner straight to the throttle body. I understand the idea that colder air flowing in from the sides is better for performance then hot air from behind the rad, but is there any other factors behind this design that im overlooking.

ps. the whole reason im asking is because im thinking of fabricating a ram air system in my 2010 ram hood, and I was thinking mounting the air cleaner straight off the throttle body and directly behind the ram air scoop. good idea or not?
