Default Engine swap

I have taken a 5.9 out of a 99 durango with 78000 miles and replace my 5.9 in my95 ram with 243000 miles on it. it sounded like a good idea at the time. I used my intake and all my electical( as the computor change from ob1 to ob2) except I used the 99 distribitor but used my cam shaft sensor and left the plugs and wires on from the 99( thinking that it should work)everything was rehooked up the same as before. Once I drove it it was running and idling great but once it warmed up is started pinging really bad so I put in my spark plugs from the 95 and I ran alot better but it still pings when i acellerate. i have tried using premium gas and it made little to no difference. my question are what determines the spark plugs the engine compression or the ignition system? and also any Ideas what can be done to get rid of the pinging? Any help will be great

Whoa. That was a job. For clarification - Are you sure you can use an OBD1 intake on an OBD 2 engine? Is it possible that the Durango engine was pinging when it was in the Durango? So you ARE using the Durango PCM on it? I believe the plugs are the same on all the Gen 2 Magnum MPI 5.9 motors, and chances are, that ain't it. So you used your cam sensor because of the harness? Just trying to get a feel for what all you got going on.

As far as I can tell the only diffence in the two intakes was that there was no spot on the 99 intake for the EGR to mount to. so I swapped Them out. It is possilble i guess as I stated it runs well.I left all the 95 (ob1) computor and wiring harness. I did go back to the original sizeplugs for the 99 as I found thy were gapped wrong. Iput new oem plugs and gap correctly, but still Pinging once the engine reaches op temp?

I tell everyone that asks
that when doing a swap, set both engines side by side on the ground or a bench
When you are ready to drop the engine back into the vehicle
It must look externally just like the engine that was originally in it

I believe the pinging is caused by advanced timing

You might try some octane booster in your gas tank as a temporary fix

you will have to get whatever engine you go with's computer, which could be over $1,000 by itself not counting the cost of the engine
the existing transmission should swap over, you would just need a bellhousing and minimal parts to make it go.
cheaper to just rebuild/stroker kit the original motor
