I doubt it would ever run this way but is there any chance the timing gears could get put on the wrong side? Are they marked left and right head?

I looked this up in the Service Manual, but it looks like the cam gears are the same for either head. If not, there is NO mention of a difference. For a moment, I was thinking you were really on to something!

Based on the gear still being torqued onto the cam, kinda throws my idea(s) out the window, but your suggestion of a rocker jamming and causing the cam to change position on the gear (via shearing the pin) is IMO a hot prospect.

It sure would be nice to find out exactly what the cause was. The whole scenario fits my description of 'Nightmare'.

I have a spare 4.7 sitting on my garage floor right now if we want to test any theories. I also have all my fresh parts and pieces coming in from the machine shop in the next couple days so let me know if you need any comparison pics.

I will hopefully be re assembling my engine on tuesday and this is all great information for me. I have built quite a few high output 2-stroke engines, a couple LT1 spec 350's and sweet 383 stroker but this 4.7 has quite a few new tricks in it that I am not as comfortable with as i would like. My only dog in this fight is that I don't make the same mistake.

it couldnt of been installed 180 because it was running just fine. thats what gets me is that it ran just fine then bam its screwed up. is it possible that there wasnt enough oil getting to the tensioner which caused the rocker to get loose then as you said come off ? but on a better note im going to pull the motor and take it to a shop to have new bearings and pistons put in it along with airrams heads, ho cams, and new intake. i would do it myself but im goin back to college on monday. i wont have the time since im 2.5 hours from home

thanks IN2H2O for that ha

I don't know for sure as I haven't done it, but as far as I know mounting points of the block are unchanged, so it should bolt right in place. Computer would need changed along with harness most likely as the new 4.7L has 2 plugs per cylinder. This would be a great upgrade for your truck. Do a few mods to this engine and you could get 400 hp probably with just head work, tune, intake ,exhaust... I wish someone was making cams for it though.

I assembled my 4.7 yesterday and I had this thread on my mind the entire time. I paid extra close attention when I assembled the timing assembly and rotated the engine 100+ times to ensure that it stayed in time.

About the only step i came across that might explain what happened to you was when torquing down the cam sprockets. If the bolt assembly bound on the face of the sprocket, then it is possible that the whole thing shifter while torquing and strained the alignment pin. Other than that, I am keeping my money on the idea that a lifter popped off and jammed the jam.

Hopefully my install goes good today and I am running again this afternoon. I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for your posts and for sharing your experience for the rest of us to learn from.

Good luck to you and i hope your up an runnin soon without any problems. your welcome for any info i put in along with the live and learn aspect. im sure my issue made some people think alittle bit before rebuilding their engine. Im still thinking it was a rocker that popped out and it all went to hell afterwards.
