I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Laramie 4X4 with the 5.9L. I recently got a roll pan installed and the rusty hitch removed.
The first question I have is regarding my four wheel drive. A couple months ago, I had the vacuum actuator system on the truck replaced with a pull-cable system because the actuator was broken when I bought it
and I wanted to try out the cable system. New years day, I get a call at 4 AM from my friend saying his girlfriend's car and his friend's van were both stuck in very wet grass and he asked if I could pull them out. So, I drive down there and engage my transfer case to 4H and pull my cable. It seemed to go into 4WD fine. Leading to my next question.....
I hooked my tow chain to my rear axle
(Is this okay to do on a regular basis? Will it hurt anything? If it's bad for it, where do you think I could weld on some tow hooks or shackle mounts to the rear of the frame to hook to without damaging my precious $50 fiberglass rollpan?) and began to pull her out. She gets out no problem, but I stop. She didn't. So, she rear ends me. (she was facing backwards) It did literally nothing to my truck, but put three dents into her trunk and broke her taillight. I laughed. This is where the last question comes in...
So, I go to pull out the van. Now, my tires are so bald that the attendant at Valvoline told me that they needed replaced immediately and aren't even safe for road use. That was a month ago. This van was downhill and I had to pull it uphill. So, I reverse down the hill, no problems. I hook up again to my rear axle and start to pull. The truck started shaking up and down or catching or something rather violently, I don't know, can't really describe it too well. It's my first 4X4 and I've never seen or heard of this happening, so I was rather worried. Is this normal? It seems like (to me, the noobie) that my 4WD wasn't fully engaged or something and kept catching, but up until this point it had been fine. Long story short, I got stuck and I had to wait for my other buddy to come and pull me out, which went fine and the truck didn't shake when I gassed it.
ANY responses are appreciated. Thank you!
Here are a few pictures of my baby:
It's actually in the shop right now getting a custom hood and a grille guard put on, new bumper covers, exhaust tips put on, as well as getting the horrible not matching roll pan repainted to match. Should be done by Tuesday. I shall post pictures!
Here ya go.
