Look on page 8 on westxsrt10 picture. It shows a castle nut. If it was mine, I would get a real staked pinion nut and swap it out using RED Loctite. Google "red Loctite for pinion nut". Go to Randy's Ring and Pinion, the pinion nut for your truck is part# YSPPN-003. I would call them and make sure, but that is what their site says. Look at their pinion nuts and the one on page 8, see the difference? They could also tell you torque specs and recommended steps to fix your truck.

What would happen if your truck slid sideways on road when rearend locked up and you got broadsided? It happened to owners already. God forbid you or family died in crash. But what if they did??? Who's fault??? Talk about a lawsuit. For that reason I would fix it myself and would not wait on RAM.

So curiosity got the better of me and I dropped the drive shaft today to take a peek at the infamous Pinion nut. I did find the castle nut however it seemed to be on pretty tight and I have no play in the yoke. Just one exposed thread so I put some red locktight all the way around it. Here are a couple of pics that I took, the first as I found it and the second with the loctight. Not sure if it will do anything to prevent a failure but at least I have some piece of mind. I did talk to Randys Ring and Pinion and they advised against removing the nut so I just applied the loctight. Sure hope they get the parts soon.

RansRAM, That's a lot better picture of the pinion nut. Its not a true castle nut, a good thing. It very well could be a purpose pinion nut. If it is, what was forgotten to have all these spin loose? With your very good picture you can now tell if it moves any at all if you start hearing any strange noises. Did you put a drop of blue Loctite on the 4 bolts?

I caught mine early... noticed I was leaking rear diff fluid so I added a new diff cover to watch it. I was losing 1 qt. of fluid every two months. Took it in to the dealer to find out I have a leaking pinion seal.

They replaced the seal and the nut but said that doesn't complete the recall because they only replaced the nut and didn't fix it.

Thanks, these iphone 5's take great pictures. The four bolts had blue loctite on them already so I did not feel it was that important to put any more on when I put them back in. Should I have ??? They were also a bitch to re-torque but I was able to get 100 ft-lbs back on them. Should I remove them one by one and put a new dab of blue loctite on them I would really be surprised if those bolts loosened up since there are four of them. Thought please ???

Where did you find the spec for 100 ft.lbs?, that seems like a lot.
You should clean the threads and re-apply 'blue' loctite on them soon.

I found it on a Google search and it was 115 but all I could get on them was 100. It took quite a bit to get them off so it seemed to me like they were torqued up that much. I may be wrong, what should they be set too ? Looks like I will be under there again tomorrow
