Default 03 4.7 1500 SLT - 3.92 Questions

I have a new (to me) truck with a blown rear axle. Pinion appears not to be attached internally so I'm assuming bearing failure. I pulled a donor from a 5.7 model of the same year with a 3.92 LSD (I think) and am ready to put it in, clean it up, add the lube and let it roll. Here are my questions:

1. Build sheet on the donor says Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle. That's the LSD right?

2. I've read horror stories of the 9.25 LSD shattering the clutches. Also read that adding an aftermarket diff cover that increases oil capacity helps a lot. Is this truly something that happens regularly? Keep in mind I've already got a bad diff in driveway.

I'm thinking that failure of the 9.25 is not UNcommon since it took me a little while to find a donor and they are gone from the local pick-a-part within 24 hours. The lube in the donor axle seemed perfect. No chips at the bottom, no metallic paint look at all. Turns pretty quiet. Hoping for the best...

Appreciate any insights.

It's fine, the 9.25 is one of the best out of the box axles out there. I have sent in excess of 510 ft/lb of torque through mine without any issue. The LSD is extreamly reliable. Most of them are bought because they are very sought after for muscle cars and off raodnuse.

I don't know if you have LSD or not
An option Trac-Lok limited slip differential uses a one-piece differential case, the same internal components as the standard open differential, and an additional pair of clutch disc packs to transfer wheel torque under poor traction conditions.

Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle ... LD actually means Light Duty in this case, in other words it is for Dodge Ram 1500 1/2 ton trucks, back then they also had Light Duty 2500s

Pretty sure it's an LSD. Remains of the sticker says ".92 Trac". Will update when I can get back to it. Raining here.

Turning one axle definitely turns the other in the same direction. Sticker says 3.92 Trac but is torn after that but it adds up to LSD.

When I pulled this rear end from the donor I pulled the cover and felt around. The gear oil was dark but not metallic at all. No grit in the bottom of the diff. When I pulled it again today and started cleaning it out I found the attached broken piece at the back of the magnet along with a few chips. No fine pieces, just 3-5 chips and this. The owner of the donor truck was driving it as recently as 2 weeks ago and had 140k miles on it without having done any work on the diff other than changing the oil at 90k.

Without pulling everything apart and dealing with the nightmare of putting it back together in the driveway, can anyone tell me what this part is? Is it worth tearing down my diff to replace this piece and what other pieces will I likely need to purchase if I do?

Thanks for any help.

LD = Light Duty, does not necessarily mean it has LSD.
