Default I now have 4.56 gears in my 2011 Ram 1500!

Got the truck back today. We had to modify the carrier for the rear axle, but it all worked out and works great! Eventually, I am hoping they will put out a Tru-Trac for this axle, but I am happy for now just getting the lower gears in there.

I am just guessing, but i think that i read that the 4.11 & 4.56 have LSD
i don't believe there is a OPEN rear end for those gears

For this axle, there are no aftermarket gears available at all. I have the LSD, and there was nothing for it. That's why we had to modify the carrier to work with the gears fromt he previous 9.25 axle.

If you ever have to pull that hill when it snows or ices over, you will be glad that you have the lower gears
I travel that hill quite often, luckily not under winter conditions
just during wrecks & fog
i use it when going to Barstow, & Vegas & it is a short quicker way to Bakersfield, i so dislike the Grapevine

you're talking about the Cajon Pass? Yeah, it's a pretty tough climb if you are towing.

I was considering this a an upgrade one day so was wondering what all was involved and how much it cost in the end. I have the LSD as well.

well, first, i would say you need a mechanic that specializes in differentials. The front was no problem. The rear required us to take the carrier to a machinist (in this case, my stepdad) to have the carrier re-drilled to match the bolt pattern for the ring gear. everything else is the same but the carrier bolts and their pattern. Once the carrier was drilled, it was no problem. A few new bearings and it all went together perfect. Total cost including labor and tax was $1540. That's a decent chunk of change, but considering many here would spend $400+ on performance mod's like CAI's or mufflers that will make a slight performance difference, if any, this is a sure way to get a huge performance increase as well as better gas mileage.

and if anyone happens to be in my area, the guy who did the work is Robert Thomas Differential http://www.robertthomasdifferentials...b_page_001.htm

The shift pattern was messed up just from changing to 35" tires. However, when I did the gear change, I also got a hypertech speedo calibrator. Input the new gear ration and tire size, and now it shifts perfect.
