Default Drive shafts??? Steel or alum

I thought I saw a picture of a 2010 or 2011 ram and it had an alum drive shaft, and I was under mine its an 2009 and it has a steel drive shaft. I just bought this and just checking things out. And was thinking about this and wondering if this is how they are and it might be an upgrade!!, thanks for the information. I did a search and did find anything about this so if you find a link post it for me, thanks!!

In 2009 when the changeover happened, alot of parts were used until exhausted.

2008's had steel driveshafts. Depending on where and how early your truck was built, would make a difference on what parts you received. For instance, my flip-down center console on the bench seat is from an 08, as is my steel driveshaft. My truck was built in november of 2008, so it is a very early build. Hard telling what else was a "use until its gone" part, I think some of the seats were too, my seats look identical to those in a 2008.

ArmyofOne, Thank you for your service. My truck was built in early Dec of 08, so maybe they ran out of steel driveshafts between Nov-Dec of 08,or waiting on more from a vender.

This is how I found out my was steel, it flaking pretty good also, I have 30,000 miles and rusting pretty good, I was thinking about taking it off and having it powder coated, but if I do that and clean it up, I wonder if I would have to have it re balanced or not. Im thinking about it, I was going to wait until after winter.

Yes it would need rebalanced, the powder coating changes the weight slightly, and if it isnt perfect can throw it off (and it wont be perfect...ever, its impossible to get it completely uniform around the entire length of the driveshaft). Pay the $50 to have it rebalanced, or you could risk throwing a tail bearing in the trans, or a rear end, or worse...

Mine being steel, will rust, but no worries,
i wont have the truck long enough for it to become a problem for me.
