I have 3.55 4x4 open diff (no limited slip)
So it seems that it doesn't have anything to do with gearing or limited slip.
So, if the dealer tech was correct in telling me it was the rear diff, THEN this does not sound like an issue at all, but more of an annoyance - which it is very annoying. It makes me want to turn the radio up loud enough (about 10-12) so that I don't hear it.

I'm tempted to go test drive another truck at the nearest dealer and see if this noise is there or not. It seems like a lot of people are hearing this noise, so it could be just the way the 2012s are.

It does sound like someone blowing over the top of a beer bottle. WOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

The easiest way is your window sticker. The next easiest is to request a build sheet from Ram customer service. The ratio is on a tag on the rear differential, but limited slip or open is not.

I had the same problem. I tried everything i found on the internet and on this and other forums. Quite by accident i figured it out. Turn on the blower for the AC and Heater 1 click and the whistle will stop.

Oddly enough I found owners.dodge.com and logged in with my VIN and other info and it brought up the details on my Ram. Shows 3.55 open diff.

As for the last suggestion with the heat/ac on 1-click, I very often run at one click and never noticed that fixing the whistle. I'll try it tomorrow morning but I don't think thats it. You may have had a different whistle thats vent related. Thanks though.

One way to find if it's drivetrain related is to get to the speed/rpm that the whistle is occurring and apply the brake slightly with your left foot and keep the truck at that speed/rpm with your right this will put a load on the gears in the rear end and tranny and also your torque converter if the whistle stops it's something in the drivetrain most likely the rear diff gears Hope this helps

Noticed this a few weeks ago, and found this thread today by accident. 3.92 4x4 lsd. Not a big enough problem to be bothersome, but I wanted to contribute my info.

I am having the same promblem on my 2011 with 5700 miles and it got worse when I leveled the truck it sounds like wind howling through the front of my truck. Really notice it when iI get up to 50mph and above driving me nuts. I called 2 different dealers and they haven't had any complaints on it. I am going to go to dealer on Monday so they can drive it, I will keep you all posted. I believe it is coming from the passengers side door or front windshield. I also tried the heat on one level and that did nothing to help! Update called dealer again today and was told that they have been adjusting door we will found out Monday.
