Default Decided my 2001 is too slow

So I "raced" my 2001 reg cab shortbed 5.2L sport against a friend in a mazda 3 hatchback, and he had me from the start. This made me realize that this truck doesn't have quite what I hoped to get out of it. I've got a Spectre cold air intake and a custom made cat back- flowmaster single in dual out, 2.5 inch pipes (crush bent not mandrel) after the muffler and exits out the rear either side of hitch. I wasn't sure if I was going to do much more to the truck but now I've decided to, so my question is, what mods are going to get me the most bang for the buck, looking at about a $1000 total to spend. First thought was long tube headers with cutouts then into the exhaust on the truck now?

Gears. Then a transmission valve body kit.

What do you mean gears? Like rear end? I'm pretty sure mine has a 3.92. Also it's 2wd.

Well 3.92 is good if that's what you have. Ok, I'd definitely focus on the exhaust, mandrel bent not crushed. If you don't want to go into the engine for a cam swap, I'd pop for better valve springs and 1.7:1 roller rockers. The added lift will help, but if you seriously want to play bumper-tag with ricers, you need more budget. A better cam with a modded intake manifold, Mopar M1, or Hughes MPI AirGap are big improvements. The stock setup falls off above 4k rpm. Some go more for tuners, but I prefer to improve hardware first, with tuners serving as icing on the cake because tuners can only maximize the hardware you have, they can't replace upgraded hardware.

Well I honestly don't do anything on the street much, it was just a we only people at stoplight thing so why not. I have a dragstrip literally a mile from my house that I go to all the time and will probably run in the street class regularly once it opens back up. This just made me realize its not quite as fast as my last truck. I figured I would end up doing headers, new intake, and cam, just wanted to see what other people said before I got my mind set on that, but seems like that's what you would reccomend so sounds like I had the right idea.
