Do you only have 150 miles on the Ram? If so, finish the break in period before you do this again (Minimum 500 miles....1000 is better). I think you will be happier.

x2

I noticed i big jump in performance around 1200 miles.

I walk all over all the Chevys in my area and even the Ecoboosts. Granted I have bolt ons, but i dont think they really made that much of a difference. LEt your engine break in and call him out again

Default Maybe tranny

I am no expert, but didn't the "6" speed trans on new trucks come out? I bet having the "extra" gear(lol) may be causing a not so quick 0-60 so to speak as the 5 spped did.

Just a thought.

By reading the manual online it says 89 Octane for Optimal Performance. I think I will try that. Maybe the 2012 have a different tune in the computer?
OUCH!!!! I have a 4.7 under my hood. I'm pretty happy with it.
Lower octane will allow for easier combustion of the fuel air mixture. There's a reason why the 4.7 has duel plugs for each cylinder. It's because straight ethanol can have an octane rating of or up to 115, and that takes extra ummpffff to ignite it. Don't run anything higher than 89 octane, unless you start hearing some knocking. During the summer months (Texas), when it's super (108 - 110), the fuels at the fuel pumps should be reformulated to match the temp. If you are towing a boat, going up hill, and it's hotter than sin outside, you may want to bump up to the next higher octane rating because the increased compression and heat might may cause what some refer to as pre-ignition (knocking). Emphasize "might".

Other than that, I wouldn't dump the extra cash in to the purchase of mid grade or premium.

Break-in what's left to break-in.
Change your oil.
Empty all access weight (tools, girlfriend...)
Meet your buddy for another run.
Chat for a while until your engine oil has had a little time to cool.
Make sure A/C and whatever else is turned off.
Meet him with just a 1/4 tank of gas (it's heavy).

If it makes you feel any better, my city uses GM vehicles for police use. Our Chevy Tahoes are screamers (M4 carbine, 12 ga shotgun, lowered a few inches, and paid to drive these over a 100 mph!). Our neighboring city uses Chargers and they are amazing, but they were told to BREAK THEM IN FIRST.

Break your truck in first before you break your truck.

One other thing i thought of. Putting it in 5 really doesnt nothing, you need to shift it yourself to use the
"prime" gears which for my usually makes a big difference.

Just put it in 2nd and once you hit second bump it to 3rd and once you hit 3rd bump it to 4th and so one. Stay one gear ahead of yourself and you should do pretty good

Well I thought I read here that by locking into 5th gear it shut off the MDS? I could be wrong on that cause I have only had the truck 1 week.

The 150 miles is how many the HEMI has. His truck has about 2,600 miles. I'm 100% sure he has no mods on truck.

What did you all do or NOT do during the break in period? At what mileage is it considered broke in?

Thats true about the fuel my truck has the bigger 32 gallon tank. That could be an extra 200 lbs in fuel.

You guys talk about eating these 5.3 what years are your trucks?

Does anyone know if something changed in the 2012 model?

Locking in into 5 will disable the MDS but when your racing the MDS will never be on anyway. Actually shifting it through the gears like SS4Luck mentioned will keep your engine at a higher rpm while shifting and that does help.

My Ram is a 2010 but it is a reg cab swb 4x4 on 17" wheels with 3:92 gears. I have raced just about every combination of Chevy truck including the 6.2 Escalade and I was never worried about getting caught by any of them! Even a 2wd ext cab eco boost couldn't keep up although he was gaining on me at the end.

I have never met up with one but the only truck out there that I would be worried about would be a 2wd version of my truck!

SS4Luck,

What kind of bolt on mods have you done to your truck.; Also do you put your truck in Tow/Haul? Do you turn off the Electronic Traction Control? By placing it in 2nd gear to start off with does that lock the transmission in 2nd and bypass 1st gear?

I have long tube headers, catback and a cai.

No by putting the gear selector in 2 it will only let the truck shift as high as second gear.

I race in to haul with the traction control off in 4wd auto
