I like driving my diesel work truck.
I have personally put 190,000 kms on it.
That being said, I'm glad I don't own it and pay for the maintenance and fuel.

i had an 04 3500 5.9 cummins, best truck ever made. the 5.9 was barley broken in with 110000 miles. wouldn't touch the newer diesels unless i needed the the torque.

I bought a 2004 Quad Cab 3/4 ton turbo Cummins about 6 months ago. So far I love it, its not growing old for me yet. I do haul a heavy load and tow on occasion, but not really enough to justify the extra cost. I guess you could say I bought it just for the heck of it. When I was looking, I had pretty much decided on a 3/4 ton truck, I just hadn't decided on a diesel or not.

As far as cost of maintance goes, thats a tough call. It holds 12 quarts of oil, but the normal change interval is 15,000 miles. In town, my truck gets better mileage than a gasser, out on the highway, about the same. Parts do cost more, but that has more to do with the fact its a 3/4 ton, not the diesel. So far, no regrets on my part.

Get a 5.9, these 6.7s with the emission crap suck. I get crappy mileage, have to do oil changes every 3000 miles because of fuel dilution due to the regen cycles, and fuel is so damn expensive. If I delete, I lose warranty and diesel repair is 1000 times more expensive and complex than a gas job. The 14mpg babying it too isnt much fun either. I wanted an 06 or early 07 with the 5.9 so bad but there were none with low low mileage. I have mixed feelings about my truck sometimes I love it and others I wish I had gotten a 1500 gasser.

Dream truck would be a 2012 CC Laramie 2500 with a built 12 valve and built 48RE trans...

I wish they would put a "small" diesel in a 1/2 ton.
Say 300 or so HP and 500 ft lb.
I think they would sell.

I don't know, I mean if I was to get a 2500, I would probably want the diesel. Sure the mpg on it sucks, but wouldn't the Hemi in the 2500 without MDS suck even more than the diesel? I downloaded the diesel supplement for the owners manual from the Ram trucks website yesterday. 12 quarts of oil - ok not bad. 7500 miles between oil changes - call it 5000 miles since the manual for my Hemi says 8000 miles which I would never go all the way to. Gotta make sure I have a block heater out here - worrying about fuel gelling and crystallizing. Then that DPF thingy. Granted, I guess the regen is easy - just hit the highway for a little bit.

But then again for a 100 mile round trip 5 days a week that I will soon be doing for a year, combined with a good chance of towing an rv and maybe even a couple horses every now and then in the future, and living in Colorado at elevation with all the hills and mountains, I could see myself driving a diesel.

I have to agree with you in the fuel mileage between the diesel and the HEMI without MDS but sounds like you would have more need for a diesel than I would. My biggest concern, even though the laws down here don't require emissions testing, I can imagine it being a pita. Never really looked into the cost of owning one, but were I to go that route, it would be an oilfield work truck, leased out for hauling, and if I ever wanted/needed to put a goose neck on it, I would have the capability. Other than that, if I ever get the winning lotto numbers, heck yeah I'd have one for fun and I'd find a reason to need it lol!

Well, can someone please tell me besides more expensive fuel and oil changes, what other extra cost is there to owning a diesel - assuming you don't have problems? And also, is it bad for a diesel to run on short trips? I think the manual said something about in stop and go traffic in cold temps to put it in neutral when stopped and increase idle speed to make sure it is running warm enough.

Yeah out here in Colorado I guess we have emission testing. I don't really know too much about laws out here yet though. But emission testing would mean no DPF delete for me. You'd be hard pressed to find a 2500 with the HEMI out here. I'm guessing because of the power loss at elevation and the terrain. If you're towing anything, the diesel is going to make going up a hill out here look easy, not to mention when that turbo spools up you're going to have all the power that it is rated for unlike the Hemi.

But I guess all those reasons aren't for fun. Mostly I just like the 2500s because they look like tanks. If I was to get one, I think I would go with the diesel, even if I barely had a use for it.
