Default Towing with O/D off on the highway????

Hi all, I got a 2003 Ram Hemi with 3.55 gears Quad cab and 4x4. I just bought a 30ft camper that wieghs 4567lbs dry. probably will be between 5200 and 5500lbs loaded. When I take O/D off the torque converter locks in 3rd instead of 5th. I only plan on going 60mph on the highway and this brings my rpms to 2500 rpms. I plan on going alot of places with this setup. Now my question is.......is this ok??? Will I be fine running at 2500 rpms for 16hrs straight???? I think I will be. I just wanna get some other opinions. Im thinking that 2500 rpms is accually right in the Hemi's powerband. The Hemi does like to rev!!! THANKS!!!

I just read your post, and chances are your trailer is going to weigh way more than you think when its loaded! You have to remember that the dry weight does not include water, batteries, propane, cargo, food, and some times "options" that the trailer has that are not included in the dry weight....As well a 30 foot trailer might be a little long for a 1/2 tonne truck to handle....And yes it is normal for your RPMS to increase when O/D is disabled.

Thanks for the reply Michael. I used the truck to pick the camper up and bring it home and it towed it just fine. I live in western PA and we got some hills. But the truck did great I thought. The only time the truck slowed down was when I went up a pretty steep hill. this hill is noturiously known for how steep it is. The truck pulled that camper at 2700 rpms at 35mph. The speed limit is 40mph. I also have the Weight Distribution hitch and Sway Bar with Huskey brake controller. I am buying 2500-3500 tow mirrors though! Thats the only thing this truck had issues with! I couldnt see anything behind me!! The sticker on the trailer says dry weight 4567lbs. Weight with full water is 367lbs more. This is a brand new 2012 Coachmen Catalina Santara. They are sure making them alot lighter than they use to. I will not fill my tanks before I leave. I will wait till I get to the campgrounds for water. so Im figureing Ill be ok there. Im hoping Im not gonna put any more than 800 or 1200lbs of cargo. I just cant see me putting anymore than that. So when I go through West Virginia to get to Myrtle beach running 2500 rpms through those mountains will I be ok???? Thanks!!!

Well it sounds like you know what you are doing! I need the towing mirrors too, my 2010 never came with them and its really hard to see...I will be buying them asap as they are well worth the investment, my local Dodge dealer wants $900 for the pair, ouch eh ? I fill up with water when i get to the campsite too(when water is available) i couldnt imagine what hauling all that extra weight would do to your MPG...Sounds like your truck is totally fine to handle that trailer as you have the weight distribution hitch and brake controller! The Hemi is made to rev much higher when in tow/haul mode as it changes the shift points of the transmission to give you a little more torque in each gear! Happy Towing!

Michael

Well the way I see it you could almost bye 4 pairs of them for one pair of the OEM. You could also google them and see what you come up with. These are the ones Im ordering Monday.http://www.ebay.com/itm/130574049710...84.m1438.l2649
