Default These old trucks can TOW!

So on my cross country trip back home, I get a call from my brother, who was stranded in Needles, CA. I was currently in San Antonio,TX so I tell him I'll see him in the morning.

I stop in Phoenix, AZ and pick up an auto transporter, drive I-10/AZ-72/AZ-62/I-40 and I find him in the hotel behind the gas station from the movie "Two Lane Blacktop" (where he met up with the Pontiac).

He has an '84 Chevy S10 longbed, on which the NEW trans blew out.

So I load him up and haul him to Mission Viejo, CA (a total of 450 miles) up and over the Cajon Pass, the 241 toll road, and dealing with the dreaded I-15/CA-91 traffic with no trouble, and actually decent MPG...

I got an average of 12.4 mpg! And that's with a 1996 RCSB 5.9 4x4 on 33" tires (has 3.55 rear end). I also had my toolbox, bicycle, and surfboard in the bed, prolly about 700lbs...

Ha Ha, pretty much! What cracked me up was his "unbreakable" 700R4 roasted, and my Chrysler automatic (among the worst ever) towed him back. He quit talkin' so much crap on ole Big Smurf... LOL

Yes, Chevy transmissions are unbreakable, and Dodge ones are supposed to blow up at 25,000 mi. Then of course, Toyotas are all built to go at least a million miles without a problem. Except in Maine, where there are no old Toyotas, cause they rusted to crap in 5 years.

Well, that's because 'yotas aren't real trucks. If the bed is plastic (Tacoma), it's a toy.

The big 3 have been around for 100 years, building trucks, a surprising amount of which from the past 50 years are still around. There's a reason for that!

I see 1970's Ford, Chevy, Dodges on the road constantly, a Toyota from that era is always a show piece, or a pile of rust...
