Unhappy Engine misfire with ticking noise

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram Hemi with 253,000 miles on it. Last week I started to get a ticking noise from the motor. The engine code returned was a misfire cylinder 5 (P0305). It seems that #5 is not firing, and after a few moments, the computer shuts the fuel injector off to this cylinder.

My mechanic has removed the valve cover, the valve springs are ok, the rocker arm appears to be operating normally. He swapped plugs and coil packs, all to no avail. The compression is good in the engine. The noise appears to be coming from the upper part of the motor.

We called the local Dodge dealer and they don't have a clue. If anyone has run into a similar problem, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming that he checked all of these possibilities thoroughly...is the ticking noise appearing after the injectors are shut off or before? Has he inspected the injectors...253,000 miles...that's a lot of potatoes!

The ticking noise is there as soon as you start the engine and remains the whole time. It is possible the ticking noise and the misfire are two separate issues. I did not know that the misfire code existed until I took the truck in to check it out for the noise.

He is going to pull the rail and see how much fuel is spraying from the injectors. As far as the mileage, I have taken a 95 Dakota w/318 and 02 Dakota w/3.9 to 500K with no internal engine issues ... I travel 90% highway miles and keep my maintenance on a regular schedule.

I escort oversize loads (yellow flashing lights). The yearly average mileage is usually 100K per year, of which about 90% are highway miles. We have been unable to find anyone who has any idea at this time what the problem could definitely be. In order to save on downtime, I am going to have a used engine installed. Then, if possible, we will have the old engine tore down, see what the malfunction was, and possibly do a complete rebuild on it. I will post what we find out. As you know, 2009 is the 1st year on the 4th Generation Hemi and even Jasper doesn't have any yet. They are currently only up to 2008.

escorting makes perfect sense lol. I know they were having issues with the '09s and the manifold bolts breaking, they just replaced 2 of mine a couple weeks ago when the wife took it in for the death wobble that developed after they did the tie rod recall

my dads old durango sounded just like this. It might not have been a hemi, but it was a bad EGR valve, a bad coil that was arcing and broken manifold bolts. Fixe those and it was quiet as new

I would emagine at 253k that motor needs an overhaul but who know... i dont know what the service history is on this but even if it was well taken care of i would just take it in to a dealer....

I have found a used 2009 Hemi with only 41,000 miles on it. After the engine swap, we will be tearing the old engine down and see what happened. Afterwards, we will most likely rebuild the engine. I will update this post as to what we found in the old engine. Like I mentioned before, I have taken 2 Dodges ('95 318 Dakota and '02 3.9 Dakota) to the half million mile mark without ever getting into the engine for anything.

I now know what happened to the engine. The roller on one of the lifters seized, damaging the cam. I think I made the right choice to replace with a used motor, seeing how the old engine would need a complete rebuild and the parts are currently only available from Chrysler until later this year.
