Default what 'controls' engine?

Ok, I have a '00 ctd 3500. I know this is the 'non common rail' ISB engine. (still uses individual lines and a mechanical/electic managed injection pump). The newer ones 'CR ISB' use the common rail system.

My only experience with CR ISB engines is my little '170' (3.9 4 cylinder cummins). It's ECU is actually attached right to the side of the block, and is cooled by incoming fuel.

My question is, do the Rams with the CR ISB (2003+) use a cummins supplied ECU in the side of the block, or are they 'run' from a Dodge supplied ECU I am assuming on the firewall.

I don't know what is used, one or the other, or a combination of the two? Thanks!
