Default Whats the job situation like for peopl ein their 20s like in your area?

I am having an IMPOSSIBLE time finding any sort of job in SoCal. I freaking hate this place some times. Its practically impossible to find anything better than part time at McDs or Ralphs or something. Ive even been looking up to an hour away and cant find anything.

Is everyone having this problem this bad or is it just SoCal? I remember it was hard in Michigan, but not this bad...

It's pretty bad. Varies by topic too. I am in the construction industry and I was the only one of all my friends that had a job upon graduating. Construction is really bad right now, probably more so than any other field, and even more so in FL. Most of my friends had to go out of state to find jobs, only a few found jobs in state. My other friends are all mechanical engineers and chemical engineers for the most part and didn't have much trouble finding jobs (I'd assume at that level that there's high demand and not much to pick from lol).

It seems like the labor forces are hit the hardest, so those without any education are having the hardest time. I don't mean this to be derogatory in any way, I feel that if you work hard then you work hard, doesn't matter if you went to school, but fact is the labor force has the most people to pool from and the demand has dwindled to about nothing right now. It's a shame that this is going on, really sad.

It does seem that things have reached rock bottom though, and are beginning to slowly turn around...

Good luck with the job search...

Many parts of the country are hurting. I am fortunate to live in one part that is doing pretty well. Our unemployment rate is pretty low, even compared to the rest of the state. Most of my family lives in SoCal so I hear the stories and yeah, it is pretty bad out there. My brother-in-law was making six figures a year doing high quality construction work and then...BAM...nothing. Had to start over from scratch. Good thing my sister had a good job to help them make it through the tough times. He is doing great now but for about a year or two, it was hard. Too many damn people out there man. Not enough jobs. Wish you nothing but the best on your search.

Go to work for the DOC. Department of corrections they always need people. I work the the Texas department of criminal justice which used to be TDC for over 8 years now. Pays in the higher side for people with no degree and it's pretty damn reliable. There will always be prisoners. The only worry is if the government will have the money in the bank when it becomes payday.

Its hard to keep some students in school up here, a lot leave before graduation and end up in entry-level jobs some-how related to the oil patch. Hell, our premier (provincial leader) is down in the states trying to get skill tradespeople to come up and work because we are running out of them, especially with the amount that will be retiring in the next 5-10 years.

I can't think of an industry here that is not hiring right now, which is also why I don't understand why we have unemployed people right now.

Our economy is NOT booming, it's just that every business owner I've talked to could use at least one more staff person, but can't find anyone willing to 'work' to apply. I think our welfare system needs a good revamping.

It's not easy but not difficult but i live in a small town. Word of mouth is the best way sometimes to find one u actually would want to work at. U may have to improvise a little and get outside the norm but dont just settle for part time at mcD's. I will say that the automotive (repair) side is booming due to the fact the general majority of people are not buying new cars. Factory's are another job that seems to be pretty easy to get into. I'm not one for shift work but have done it before and most require very slight experience and pretty good pay. Good luck to ya bud!

Unions are partially to blame. Not that they are bad, (don't jump my @$$ for saying that), just that some people are used to a certain wage and would rather take handouts than take a job that is "beneath" them. That and the fact that some folks can't move their entire family to another area (especially Canadian ) just to take a job.

I hear ya on that one Brad. The problem for us is nobody wants to work in the middle of nowhere for 2-3 weeks at a time, they like their shift at Timmies or A&W then home to family/friends. I have a great shift, 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, and the client flies me into location so I don't have a 7hr drive each way.
