And that is why all diesels out on or job sites are required to have positive air shut off switches, because they will do that in the presence of flammable gasses to the point that they will either catch on fire or seize and blow up.

Yup, runaways are very dangerous. I was working a turnaround at an oil site in Rainbow Lake, Alberta and they had a diesel crew truck sitting beside a vac truck that was sucking down a storage tank. The truck picked up the exhaust from the vac pump and ran away. One of the greenhorns ran for the kill switch but it all exploded when he was just feet away. he was pretty badly burned but he survived.

^that, Once a diesel runs away there are only 2 ways to shut it down...cut off the air, or cut off the fuel.

See it all the time when Injector Pumps overheat over here. For as much as diesels dont like extreme cold, they dont like 120+F either.

I watched a diesel run out of fuel & it started running high revs & would have blown, except for the rags we used to cut off the air at the air filter
I would not have been happy if the engine grenaded in my face

That was awesome. I don't know a whole lot about diesels and never worked on them, didn't realize they'd do that...makes sense though...
