3G guys who race will tell you to avoid it at all cost if you want your trans to last.

I now just run 1-2-3, ET's are the same but my trap speed is down slightly now.

I'll bet I'll pick that back up with some more HP and headers next time out.

I track test the crap out of everything I do to my truck,
Have well over 200 passes in the last 2 years on her now.
and when the track is closed I use a back country road and my tuners

Here's an old vid, testing with my old BullyDog using 2nd prime

here's another...

Quite a bit more power and shifting at 6400 rpm with a Diablo 93 tune now

Traction problems ...check out the 2nd gear chirp on this one

If I put my 2012 in Tow/Haul Mode and do a full throttle launch, will it skip right past second prime?

You tell me LOL!

I dont have a 12', mines a 10'

I can show you what to look for though...

Here's what a full throttle second prime shift sounds like, and looks like on the tach
The first shift is normal 1-2 and rev's drop off from 5600 to about 3700 going into 2nd.

The next shift from 2nd- 2pr is much shorter due to the closeness of the ratio difference from 1.67 to 1.5
watch how the needle on the tach only drops slightly from 5600 to 5200 rpm *
and the gear indicator on the evic shows "3" because there is no 2pr digit on a 10' Ram ...so it reads incorrectly as 3rd.
The final shift to the real third gear is mis-labeled as 4th on the EVIC, just before I reach the quarter mile
(3.55 gears, stock G/Y tires on 20" wheels, stock shift points)

*I'm guessing that the lack of a full shift in the trans is similar to slipping the clutch on a manual transmission,
burning off the frictions and clutch material is what probably leads to transmission failure if it's abused too many times.

Here's a normal 1-2-3 shift quarter mile run without 2nd prime
545REF up shift ratio's are 3:1, 1.67:1, 1:1

545RFE: 5 Speed , Rear wheel drive, Fully Electronic

in normal Drive mode:
1=1st – 3.00:1
2=2nd – 1.67:1
3=3rd – 1.00:1
4=4th – 0.75:1
5=5th – 0.67:1

Tow/Haul mode adds second prime, but drops the second overdrive
so its still a 5 speed, (But after you hit 5th you "can" release the Tow/Haul manually to get into 0.67 OD)

1=1st – 3.00:1
2=2nd – 1.67:1
3=2nd Prime – 1.50:1
4=3rd – 1.00:1
5=4th – 0.75:1

65RFE puts 2nd prime in the up shift sequence,
and keeps the final overdrive = 6 Speed Transmission via reprogramming the old 545REF

1=1st – 3.00:1
2=2nd – 1.67:1
3=2nd Prime – 1.50:1
4=3rd – 1.00:1
5=4th – 0.75:1
6=5th - 0.67:1

Ok, it definitely skips 2' at full throttle. Tested it last night.

Good to know, thanks for testing.
That would put you in a 1:1 gear at a quarter mile marker.

But how about full throttle in Drive with no Tow/Haul mode?

I'm assuming it adds the "short shift" back in under normal part throttle excel when not using Tow/Haul or manual shift and that's the only time it's a "true" 6 speed with 5 up shifts.

How much quicker in the 1/4 do you think your truck would be if it had 3.92s?

Not enough IMHO, a buddy with same mod's/tires as me in an R/T (4.10's)
was only 2 tenths quicker (when I had my stock stall vs his 2600)

Now that I've upped my stall to an Edge 3K, I beat his best ET by 2 10ths.

When I swap gears, it will be to 4.56's

I would like to know what you are doing for your launch. This is the 14.28, the best one that i got on video.

I lauched a little dff each time. Fisrt time stalled it up to abt 1500. Barley holding the breaks. Sometimes it actually hurts it to trey to stall it up as high as it can. But i just stalled it to abt 1500-1700 an nailed it. The 2nd run i flashed the stall . Thts when you just let it idle then nail it. Tht resulted in a little slower 60ft but was still pretty good.

Why does 2nd prime hurt the tranny? Does anyone have proof or smthn saying it does? Im going to try to use it when i race next time. I Cross the line at like 92mph and thts in thrid gear. When it shifts from 2nd to 3rd its close to the line and just feels like it runs outta steam. When it shifts from 2nd to 2nd prime it runs up to abt 98 mph an gets there a hell of alot faster than when going straight to 3rd. I think i could drop a couple tenths by using it. Well see tho

To me it seems like the drop from 2nd(1.67) to 3rd or 4th(depending on year model) 1.00 is a real killer in these trucks. You appear to get more mph than any of the stock R/T's I've seen here and I think it's because their having to pull that 1.1 ratio so much sooner (and I thought I read somewhere on this forum about a guy with a R/T complaining about that). In fact some of the highest mph (with fairly stock trucks) seems to be with the 3.55's, I'd really like to see what an 12 Express with a tune would do, guess we'll have to wait a little while for that. As far as 2nd prime or 3rd (1.5) it sure helps with that last stretch of the 1/4 mile (with the 3.55's), but I don't know about the possible damage that might happen. Back in the 80's I had a F-150 with a 428CJ out of a 69 Torino. 14.62 @ 97 was the best I could do with a 3.25 single track and 3spd auto, These new Rams get it!

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but when racing do you put it in D and run it with trac off? Leave tow mode off?

I read if you are on the highway and want to get on it, to manually downshift to 4th so you don't burn up the trans, but when racing 1/4 mile would it be good to put it in 4 to keep it from upshifting or just leave it in D and go?

I plan to run mine next week. I want to try and stall it up as high as i can on the line against the brakes and then just stand on it.
