Red face First Oil Change Reminder in EVIC

Hi guys,

When can I expect my first oil change reminder to come up in the EVIC? I'm sitting on 800 miles right now and I'm planning to do the round trip from Toronto, Canada to Portland, ME over the easter holiday weekend (I'm figuring around 1,500 miles once I factor in some other mileage).

Question is - I expect to be ready to take her in for her first oil change around the 3,500 - 4,000 mile mark. Does that sound reasonable or is my reminder likely to go off significantly before that? If so - I'm tempted to get it done prior to the trip across to ME.

Thanks guys - appreciate y'all taking the time to answer my dumb questions!

Default First Oil Change

The manual sounds like EVIC is programmed to pop up at either 4 months or when the oil is no longer read as "good" by the sensor. I am not completely sure on this, the manual is not specific and requires some inference.

I am at 850 miles right now and am going to change it shortly. Thinking of going with the 5W-20 Valvoline NextGen oil and the mopar filter. Anyone have experience or input on Nextgen? Has anyone used it?

For the 12's oil changes are only every 13,000kms. I have 2400kms, 1500miles on mine and the oil is still really clean. I am probably going to make my first change at 5000kms and swith to full synthetic then one at 13,000, 26,000 etc following the recommended changes.

Here's a thread on oil changes and what other people are doing: http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread....ght=oil+change

dodge says change the oil at every 8K miles....That message is on a mileage timer, there is no sensor to tell if the oil is clean or not...

The EVIC sensor is off,
i change my oil & filter at 5,000 miles, but i use synthetic
my EVIC warns me at less then 3000 miles on my 2009

The sensor is suppose to tell you when the oil is beginning to break down

I will tell you, that it does let you know when the incorrect weight oil is in it
someone put 10W-30 in my Ram & the EVIC lit up like crazy the very next day

Mine turned on at 3500 miles on the dot. I now have 7200 and it has not asked for another change.

As far as I know, the EVIC oil indicator is NOT just a timer. It uses some complex algorithm (accounting for time, temperature, throttle postion, average rpm, etc...) to determine when the oil is breaking down and needs changed.

I will say that I use synthetic oil and change it anywhere from 5,000-10,000 just depending on how "good" the oil looks. The indicator usually comes on around when I'm planning on changing it (say within 500 or 1000 miles).

Personally, I'd do the first oil change on a fresh motor sooner than later, especially before a trip. No, it's not REQUIRED, but it should prolong engine life and performance slightly.

I just hit 550 miles on mine and I'm gonna go ahead and change to full synthetic this weekend. I've never trusted the oil reminders so I will change it at my own predetermined points. If it comes on before that I'll just reset it.

My Escalade and my TL have oil life % monitors that count down from 100% and those have always been pretty accurate.

Just change it before your trip and be sure to reset the oil reminder, key on gas pedal to the floor 3 times in 10 seconds or something like that and you should be good.
