Question Aftermarket transmission cooler...

I have a '01 Ram 1500 4x4 w/ the 5.9 w/ about 90,000 miles on it. The ye ole trans got hot the other day and started to shift up and down like it had ADD so I shut it off and let it cool for a few hours and it hasn't done it since. My question is should I spend the cash on possibly a new trans cooler with maybe a hi flow electric fan to help cool that bastard or what else can I do, is it worth it? Maybe I'm putting off the inevitable but maybe I can save her. If this seems like a game plan how do I go about installing one? Any help would be awesome!

I recommend you buy the imperial maxi-kool xl part number 243012, advanced auto sells them for about 60 bucks they work extremely well, I installed this on my 46rh for towing and it does a hect of a job, i also have a 3 row all aluminum radiator in the van so it also helps with keeping the temps down. i find it odd that your transmission starts to have an erratic shift when warm, it almost sounds like an electronics problem. my transmission the 46rh doesn't have sensors so you can drive it into the ground practically. the electronics i must say can be helpful with giving you a warning in advance. the older transmissions give you warnings too but they usually have some amount of damaged included in the message lol...

oh as far as installation of the cooler, what i do is install the cooler horizonatally and i connect the fluid lines so the fluid has to travel against gravity (up), the reason i do this is because it has been proven to help cool the fluid more and it helps keep fluid pressure at the intermediate shaft.

in my installation i actually removed the anti-drain back valve and install the cooler between the pressure line from the trans and the stock oem cooler, i do this because it helps keep the engine from heating up during racing and towing. but many people don't do this, why they don't i haven't a clue but many race teams have it in this arrangement and hey it does the job.
