Default 2002-2004 5 speed manual transmission vs 2005+ 6 speed manual transmission.

Hi guys. So what's the difference between the 2004- and the 2005+ manual transmissions. 2004 and under are 5 speed and 2005 and over are 6 speed. Other than the number of gears, how can you compare both?
Is one stronger than the other one? Can one withstand more abuse and torque from the next one??

Does anyone know the gear ratios from both transmissions?

Thank you very much.

So what do you guys think?
Which transmisison will outperform the next? 6speed manual or the 5speed manual?

I know nothing about them, didn't even know there was a change. If you can find out the model numbers of each I can probably give you feedback on them.

I wouldn't even know the names of them.
I just know that from 2002 to 2004 the manuals are 5 speed and 2005 to 2008 they are 6 speed.
Well I think that the 2002-2004 5 speed is the NV3500. I don't know about the 2005-2008 6 speed.

I think the 6 speed is a getrag 238. From a quick search, it is possible to make the switch, but there are concerns on the getrag's strength.

I'd LOVE and PAY to swap a manual (heck even a five speed) into my 2010 4.7L. I'm just afraid the pcm won't cooperate since they never made a 4th gen with manual...

That's why I bought this truck that I have. I wanted a 4gen but they come out with a manual transmission. I even sent an email to dodge asking if they were ever going to make a 1500 with the hemi and manual transmission. I told them that I would like to have a custom made 2012 dodge ram 1500 long horn edition with the g56 6speed manual. I told them that this truck is my dream truck with manual and I'm sure that thousands of people would agree with me and that this is what a lot of people want and that not everyone likes the automatic transmission.
Dodge told me that they do what they can and always strive to give what the public wants. I told them that the public wants the manual transmission back. I never got a response. Lol

Yeah well keep in mind say there's 30 people on the forums that want manual trans, there's about 300,000 not on the forum that don't lol. So I understand where they are coming from.

The older 5 speed is the NV3500, the newer 6 speed is the getrag 238. I confirmed that on superchip's website where the ask you to select your transmission. I'm seriously considering trying to do a swap to my 2010 4.7L from the auto to manual down the road (after warranty is up).

If you do, then you might be the first 4 gen 1500 to have a manual transmission.
I might do that too. If I ever decide to get a 4th gen long horn with the hemi. If money allows it sometime in the far future. But in the meantime, I'm very happy with my 2005 ram. True, others are more powerful but you just can't beat the sense of satisfaction when shifting through the gears in a truck. Then when you need the 4x4, you reach down and shift the lever. Its like an extra bonus that says: "enough with the bullshit!!"
This and many more reasons are why dodge and others need to bring back the manual transmission to trucks.

snrusnak. Thanks for the information on the trannys. Would you happen to know the gear ratios of both?

Funny....the NV3500 is probably the better choice (IMO).
